Playing without their Italian striker Fabrizio Miccoli, Birkirka- ra made no fewer than five chang- es from the team which drew with Floriana while Naxxar made three changes from their last outing. The stripes started off the brightest and took the lead af- ter 40 minutes through a clever finish by Slovenian striker Vito Plut. Bolstered by their opener, Birkirkara pressed ahead and two minutes later, the Stripes doubled their lead thanks to Ellinton An- tonio Costa Morais, who placed the ball at the back of the net from Juan Quero Barroso's cross. At half time, the Stripes' lead looked insurmountable and vic- tory was all but secured when Naxxar were reduced to ten men after Angus Buhagiar received a second yellow card on 55 min- utes. However, Birkirkara failed to capitalise on their technical and numerical superiority as Naxxar refused to give up. The Lions started their improb- able comeback on 76 minutes thanks to Demba Toure who took advantage of a misplaced pass to beat Justin Haber with a fine shot from the right. Five minutes later, a revitalised Naxxar levelled the score when Demba Toure's attempt off the rebound was blocked by a de- fender and Richard Cardozo took the loose ball and with a low shot from outside the area, he placed the ball at the back of the net. The shocked Stripes tried to re- store their lead and in the dying moments substitute Zach Muscat saw his shot go wide to leave the Birkirkara fans disappointed at their team's failure to go joint first with bitter rivals Valletta.
