DECEMBER 10 A Century with Edith Piaf The Strada Stretta Concept in collaboration with the French Embassy - Cultural Section and Valletta 2018 Foundation, under the artistic direction of Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci, present an evening dedicated to Édith Piaf to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of her birth, at Loop Bar, Strait Street, Valletta from 20:00. Mezzo-soprano Clare Ghigo accompanied by accordionist Yuri Charyguine, will be performing a number of great classics by Édith Piaf, throughout the evening. DECEMBER 10, 13 Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci Live screening of the Royal Opera House, London production of the two operas at Eden Cinemas, St Julian's at 19:15 on December 10 and 15:00 on December 13. These two short Italian operas are regarded as composers' masterpiece and are brought together in a new staging by award-winning director Damiano Michieletto, who sets both operas in a poverty stricken village in 1980s southern Italy, where the Mafia has a hold. The Royal Opera's Music Director Antonio Pappano condusts a cast that includes charismatic Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek, exciting Italian soprano Carmen Giannattasio and the thrilling latvian tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko. DECEMBER 11 MPO Orchestral Concert Series 1 Concert by The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra at the Manoel Theatre, Valletta at 20:00. Conducted by Christophe Gedschold with soloist Laura Falzon (f lute). EXHIBITIONS UNTIL DECEMBER 16 Running with Scissors Paul Scerri's solo exhibition held at the Splendid, Strait Street, Valletta. The series of work has been developed over the past 12 months, it comprises over 30 freestanding works as well as wall hangings. Curated by Lisa Gwen Baldacchino. UNTIL JANUARY 7 Mdina Biennale – 'Christianity, Spirituality and the Other' The Mdina Cathedral Contemporary Art Biennale will establish a spiritual space celebrating creativity. The theme for 2015 is 'Christianity, Spirituality and the Other', 'The Other' standing for faith and non-faith, belief and non-belief, theist and atheist, agnostic and polytheist. The Mdina Biennale traces its roots back to the previous Christian and Sacred Art Biennale of the 1990s, and the forthcoming 2015 event will radically widen its creative spectrum. UNTIL JANUARY 10 Watches Palazzo Falson Historic House Museum in collaboration with Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti is continuing with its series of temporary exhibitions with an exhibition dedicated to antique watches. Over 50 watches specially loaned from private and museum collections, highlight the technological and artistic qualities of antique watches. This exhibition is guest-curated by David Thompson, who occupied the role of senior curator of Horology at the British Museum until his recent retirement. The exhibition considers their variations and functions, and takes an in-depth look at particularly important watches belonging to notable personalities. More information: http://www.palazzofalson.com/. FILM SCREENINGS TONIGHT CineXjenza – Screening of Wit Screening of the film Wit (2001) at St James Cavalier, Valletta at 19:00. Organised by CineXjenza. Directed by Mike Nichols, the film tells the story of English literature professor Vivian Bearing following her diagnosis with ovarian cancer. It goes through the various stages that the cancer takes, experimental treatments and the effect it has on her, and reflections of her past memories. Following the screening of Wit, together with guest speaker Prof Pierre Schembri Wismayer (University of Malta), join in the discussion on the science of how cancer forms, misconceptions on the disease, the research being performed in Malta on cancer and answer questions on cancer in general. DECEMBER 10 Film Night: Style Wars + Beat This Double film screening on hip-hop, graffiti and street culture at Gugar, Republic Street, Valletta at 21:00. Featuring Style Wars (1983) and Beat This!: A Hip Hop History (1984). Originally broadcast on PBS in 1983, Style Wars takes a look at New York City in the 80s, and the emerging hip hop/graffiti phenomenon that would totally transform music, dancing, art and modern culture. Beat This features out-there sci-fi imagery and reams of terrific archival material, including live performances by Afrika Bambaataa and Kool Herc and incredible footage from Herc's original dance parties. CHRISTMAS EVENTS UNTIL JANUARY 3 Bethlehem f'Ghajnsielem Bethlehem f 'Għajnsielem is an animated nativity village spread on 20,000sqm of land at Għajnsielem, Gozo. Bethlehem f 'Għajnsielem will also include re-enactments of the 'trip' from Nazareth to Bethlehem of Joseph and Mary as well as the Adoration of the Magi on the Epiphany (first Sunday after New Year's day) when the three Wise Men will depart on horseback from Malta to Cirkewwa terminal where they will board a ferry in mid-afternoon before making the triumphal entrance to the nativity village. UNTIL JANUARY 27 Cribs Exhibition The St Joseph the Worker Exhibitions Society of Birkirkara will be organizing for the 13th consecutive year, the Annual Exhibition of Cribs. In this exhibition one can find numerous cribs of every size and shape, as well as Baby Jesus statuettes, paintings and other items related to Christmas. Most of the items are handmade exhibits produced by the exhibitors themselves. Some of the exhibits will be shown publicly for the first time. The exhibition will be held at the Parish Centre of St Joseph the Worker, no 71, Bwieraq Street, Birkirkara.
