L-AWTORITA' MALTIJA DWAR L-LOGROB *g.m t Mahrez's penalty brace puts Leicester top at Christmas LEICESTER moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League table after they held on for a 3-2 victory at Everton. Riyad Mahrez scored from the penalty spot after 27 minutes before Romelu Lukaku netted for the seventh successive league game to draw the hosts level. But another Mahrez penalty - after Jamie Vardy was brought down by Tim Howard - saw Leicester retake the lead. Shinji Okazaki then scored a third with 20 minutes remaining. Kevin Mirallas struck late on to ensure a nervy ending for Clau- dio Ranieri's side, but the Foxes saw out the win to occupy the top spot on Christmas Day, having being bottom at the same stage last year. Chelsea's players responded to Jose Mourinho's departure by recording a comfortable 3-1 win over Sunderland at Stamford Bridge. Guus Hiddink will take over from Mourinho, whose name was chanted by the home fans throughout the match, until the end of the season. And the Dutchman sat with Didier Drogba and owner Ro- man Abramovich to see Branis- lav Ivanovic open the scoring for the hosts after just five minutes. Pedro then doubled Chelsea's lead shortly after before Oscar scored from the penalty spot with 50 minutes gone. Fabio Borini scored for Sunder- land moments later, but it proved to be only a consolation for Sam Allardyce's side. Manchester United boss Lou- is van Gaal was placed under further pressure after his side slipped to a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Norwich City. Wayne Rooney returned to make his 500th appearance for United, but the captain was un- able to inspire the shot-shy hosts, who mustered just two attempts on target - one of those being Anthony Marital's 66th minute goal. Norwich were already lead- ing by two at that stage, thanks to strikes from Cameron Jerome and Alex Tettey, and the Canar- ies hung on to claim their first win at Old Trafford in 26 years. United's defeat saw Tottenham climb above them into the top four following a 2-0 victory at Southampton. Harry Kane scored for Spurs after 40 minutes before Dele Alli netted a second moments later. Southampton are now without a win in their last five Premier League outings. In contrast, their south coast rivals Bournemouth secured their third win on the bounce at nine-man West Brom. James McClean was sent off in the first half before Adam Smith scored with a fantastic strike for the visitors shortly after half- time. Gareth McAuley netted West Brom's equaliser with just 10 minutes remaining, but Charlie Daniels scored an 87th-minute penalty after Dan Gosling was fouled to claim all three points for Eddie Howe's side. Salomon Rondon compounded a miserable day for the Baggies by also being dismissed in stop- page time. Crystal Palace substitute Lee Chung-yong scored a stunning winner to seal a 2-1 victory at Stoke. Connor Wickham gave Palace the lead on the stroke of half- time from the spot, but Bojan levelled for the Potters with his penalty after 76 minutes. The game looked destined for a draw before Lee claimed the win- ner with two minutes remaining to see Alan Pardew's impressive side join Spurs and Manchester United on 29 points. Jordan Ayew's piledriver denied Newcastle a third successive victory and handed relegation- haunted Aston Villa a glimmer of hope. The Ghana international can- celled out a rare Fabricio Coloc- cini strike - his first goal in more than 13 months - and ensured a 1-1 draw on a rain-soaked evening at St James' Park. Villa grew into the game after finding themselves under the cosh for most of the first half and enjoyed the better of the second as the Magpies went to pieces in front of a crowd of 48,234. Shinji Okazaki makes it 3-1 to Leicester City against Everton Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal was placed under further pressure after his side slipped to a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Norwich City
