Financial pressures are so great that 18% of pre-retirees world- wide predict that they will never be able to retire fully. This is al- most twice the proportion that said the same in 2015, when 10% of pre-retirees expected never to be able to afford to fully retire. In the survey of more than 18,000 people in 17 countries worldwide, HSBC found that the desire to retire among 45+ pre- retirees is strongest in Argentina (78%), France (77%), China (75%) and in the UK (75%). Of those aged 45+ who would like to stop working and are unable to do so, 81% say this is because they would struggle financially. HSBC's report also reveals that 55% of working age people over 45 who would like to retire in the next five years want to do so to have the freedom to travel or pursue other interests, and 44% say they would like to spend more time with family. Nearly one in three (29%) say they would like to retire because they are tired of the everyday routine of work and almost a quarter (23%) say it is be- cause their work is having a nega- tive impact on their mental and/ or physical health. Working age people over the age of 45 who have a retired partner are most likely to want to retire in the next five years (81%), with 39% saying they would like to do so to join their partner in retirement. Of those 45+ pre-retirees who would like to retire but are un- able, 64% say this is due to not having saved enough, 32% say it is because they have dependants who rely on their income and 24% cannot retire due to having a lot of debt. Charlie Nunn, Group Head of Wealth Management, comments: "People worldwide are recognis- ing that retirement can be an op- portunity for reinvention and new beginnings. Yet financial barriers are preventing many people from retiring when they would like to – or, in some cases, at all. Almost one in five people fear that they will never be able to retire fully, so the need for sound financial plan- ning is stronger than ever. "People should consider these aspirations when planning for retirement and ensure they are making sufficient financial pro- visions for this new chapter in life. Even small amounts saved today can lay the groundwork for a comfortable retirement tomor- row, placing retirement dreams squarely within reach." HSBC's research identified four actions that individuals can take to improve their financial well- being in retirement. Start saving for an earlier retire- ment Improve your chances of retir- ing when you want to, by starting your retirement saving as early as possible. Plan for a longer, more active re- tirement Ensure you have a financial plan in place to make the most of this new chapter in your life. Aim for a healthier retirement Don't wait until you have stopped working to take active steps to improve your health. Consider how your healthcare needs may change in retirement Consider your financial obliga- tions throughout retirement and make sure that potential health- care needs are included in your plan. 4 Almost twice as many pre-retirees as last year say they expect never to fully retire 18% 10% 2016 2015 3 I would struggle financially, I haven't saved enough I have dependants who rely on my income I would struggle financially, I have a lot of debt 81% More than four in five people aged 45+ who want to retire in the next five years but are unable to, blame financial constraints 32% 22% 2 But almost two in five are unable to France 54% Argentina 51% Singapore 48% Canada 45% UK 45% Australia 43% Mexico 41% Brazil 40% Taiwan 39% USA 37% Hong Kong 33% China 31% Malaysia 28% UAE 22% Egypt 17% India 14% Indonesia 14% 1 Nearly two thirds of people aged 45+ would like to retire in the next five years if they could The desire to retire: retirement is out of reach for 2 in 5 workers who want it The Future of Retirement Healthy new beginnings Responses from working age people and retirees in a global survey of 18,000 people in 17 countries and territories To read The Future of Retirement Healthy new beginnings report visit www.hsbc.com Survey conducted in September and October 2015 by Ipsos MORI H O NG K O NG U K T A I W A N S I N GA P ORE E G Y PT I N D I A I N DO N E S I A B RA ZI L CH I N A A R G E N T I N A A U S T R A L I A U AE M A LA Y S I A M E X I C O U S A CAN ADA F R A NC E 5 7 % 7 5 % 6 1 % 6 8 % 1 5 % 6 1 % 58 % 7 3 % 7 5 % 7 8 % 74 % 2 9 % 6 9 % 7 0 % 7 2 % 7 4 % 7 7 % 65% Average 64%
