maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 30 MARCH 2016 17 Events Local musicians to perform at the International Spring Orchestra Festival SOPRANO Miriam Cauchi and piano soloist Charlene Farru- gia, with the European Union Chamber Orchestra, will grace the Manoel Theatre as part of this year's International Spring Orchestra Festival (ISOF) on Saturday 2 April, in a concert with pieces by Brit- ten, Vella, Mo- zart and Haydn. The first piece of the ISOF's Saturday evening concert will be Ben- jamin Britten's Simple Symphony op 4. Britten wrote the piece in 1934 at the age of 20, and despite it being a modest work, it gained him a large amount of popularity very quickly. Up next will be Dust on the Path (Song Cycle) op. 138, a series of collected poems by Alistair Chal- mers which in 2015 were set to music in a song cycle for Soprano and Orchestra by Mro Joseph Vel- la. The premiere of this work was performed at the opening night of the 2015 Victoria Arts Fes- tival, and is now being performed at the Manoel Theatre on the occasion of the ISO Fes- tival. The third piece will be Wolfgang Ama- deus Mozart's Piano Concerto K.415. A major fac- tor in Mozart's initial success in Vienna were the concerts he per- formed as a soloist. The- atre space in Vienna was limited at the time and Mozart's concerts often took place in unusual ven- ues, such as a large room in an apartment building and the ball- room of a restaurant. The fourth and last piece will be Franz Josef Haydn's Symphony Nr 34 in D Minor Hob I/34. The scor- ing of the symphony is typical of Haydn in this period: two oboes, bassoon, two horns, strings and continuo. The high-level artists perform- ing in this opening concert in- clude Miriam Cauchi, who is a firmly established Maltese so- prano, making a name for herself both here in Malta and overseas. Charlene Farrugia is recognised as one of Malta's most versatile and imaginative musicians and among today's most engaging pia- nists. She has appeared on major international concert platforms in recitals and concerto performanc- es and is also in great demand for a wide variety of chamber music groups, playing with some of the world's leading singers and in- strumentalists. The European Union Chamber Orchestra gave its first concerts in 1981 and soon gained a worldwide reputation as a musical ambassa- dor for the European Union. Af- ter touring extensively all over the world, since 2005 the EUCO has devoted more time to performing across Europe, in particu- lar in the new member states of the Europe- an Union. Giving annually circa 50 concerts (to date in 73 coun- tries), its sched- ule includes prestigious halls such as the Am- sterdam Concert- gebouw, Frankfurter Alte Oper, Milan's Sala Verdi and Valencia's Pa - lau de la Musica as well as many major halls across Britain. Hans-Peter Hofmann will be conducting the European Union Chamber Orchestra for this con- cert. The concert by the European Union Chamber Orchestra and Malta Philharmonic Orchestra Winds, with soprano Miriam Cauchi and piano soloist Char- lene Farrugia will be held at the Manoel Theatre, Valletta, on Saturday April 2 at 8pm. Seven more locali- ties joined GreenPak during the past two years, resulting in an average increase of 20% in the total recyclable waste material collected. By entrusting GreenPak to pro- vide their communities with bet- ter waste collection services, lo- cal councils are offering superior services to their residents and business communities to sepa- rate waste. The surge in recycling is even more pronounced in certain lo- calities, such as Mosta, which registered a staggering 34% in- crease in total waste material collected in its first year upon migrating to GreenPak's scheme. The localities of Qormi, Swieqi, Santa Lucija, Santa Venera, Msi- da and Naxxar all experienced significant improvements, most scoring higher-than-average per- centage growth during their first year with GreenPak's scheme. Following suit in a bid to im- prove its waste recycling rates, this month St Julian's Local Council has also migrated to join forces with the growing family of localities serviced by GreenPak. As a way of gaining traction and increasing environmental aware- ness amongst the St Julian's resi- dents, free green recycling bags will be distributed to each house- hold in addition to door-to-door educational campaigns. Karl Gouder, Mayor of St Ju- lian's said: "In a bid to improve upon the cleanliness and waste recycling collections in St Ju- lian's, the council decided to join GreenPak, which has a proven track record in helping localities drastically improve their envi- ronmental performance. Our de- cision to opt for the GreenPak's scheme will lead to that leap of quality our locality deserves." Ing. Mario Schembri, Green- Pak Coop Society CEO said: "As Malta's leading national waste recovery scheme, covering more than 74% of the country's popu- lation, we constantly seek to pro- vide recycling opportunities in a responsible manner and make it practical for residents and busi- nesses to come forward and play their part in making their locali- ties environmentally conscious." "In each locality served by GreenPak, we introduce ameni- ties to help communities achieve higher environmental perfor- mance in an economically viable manner. This entails a combina- tion of methods, including the provision of bring-in sites, kerb- side collections and direct collec- tions from commercial outlets. We make it a point to sit down with each and every local council in order to address their specific needs and provide tailor-made solutions," added Ing. Schembri. GreenPak is authorised and ap- proved by MEPA for the collec- tion of packaging waste in Malta. More information about the col- lection schemes, bring-in-sites and other information of interest to residents, one can call their respective local council.
