maltatoday, SUNDAY, 17 APRIL 2016 51 Sport FOOTBALL Pembroke secure top-flight status with last gasp victory Floriana ..................... 2 Pembroke Athleta ....... 3 PEMBROKE retained their top- f light status with a last minute win over a poor Floriana side, who came down crashing down following their derby exploits last week. Pembroke thought they had missed a golden opportunity to win all three points when they squandered a two-goal lead. However, substitute Gustavo Da Silva scored a dramatic injury time winner against 10-man Flo- riana to secure his side's place in the Premier League. Pembroke went ahead on the 13th minute when Gustavo Vil- lalobos beat goalkeeper Matthew Calleja Cremona with a sublime volley. The goal shocked Floriana and the Greens missed a good chance to draw level when Mauricio Vil- la's header hit the crossbar on the 29th minute. Just before the break Floriana missed another opportunity when Nicolas Chiesa saw his shot go wide with the goal at his mercy. The second half started with Pembroke on the front foot. And the promoted side doubled the score when Villalobos sent Manolito Micallef through with the former Greens captain chip- ping the ball over Calleja Cre- mona's head. Pembroke looked well-placed to secure the win as Floriana strug- gled for f luency but the game turned on its head in the last 10 minutes when against the run of play the Greens scored from two penalties. Villalobos's foul on Villa prompted referee Sandro Spiteri to point to the spot and Fonta- nella made no mistake to give his side a glimmer of hope. Barely two minutes later, Villa was again tripped inside the box, this time by Bugeja, and Fonta- nella once again sent Muscat the wrong way. One minute from time, the Greens were reduced to ten men after Matteo Piciollo was sent off by referee Sandro Spiteri. Despite the setback, Pembroke took advantage of their numeri- cal supremacy and scored the winner thanks to substitute Gustavo De Silva who advanced before slotting past Calleja Cre- mona. Godwin Mensah's second half goal was enough to secure the three points meaning that Naxx- ar will be playing the Premier League play-off against division one hopefuls Senglea Athletics. Ahead of their FA trophy quar- ter-final showdown with Balzan on Tuesday, the Rainbows rested some of their star players and coach Clive Mizzi gave some of his fringe players a run-out. Mosta were the most dangerous of the two sides but goalmouth chances were few and far be- tween. Following two goalless draws in the first two rounds, yesterday's match seemed destined towards another drab draw but 15 minutes from time, Mosta scored the all- important goal when off a corner, Godwin Mensha blasted the ball past goalkeeper Andrea Cassar. The Saints' loss was the fifth consecutive setback, leaving them four points behind Naxxar Lions with two games to go and the Lions having a game in hand. If Naxxar beat Qormi in to- day's basement clash, the Saints will be playing in the second tier next season. Sliema emerged from what can be termed as a dress rehearsal for Tuesday's FA Trophy quar- ter-final clash in high spirits in what was an easy win. The Blues took the lead on the 33rd minute when the prolific Jean Paul Farrugia took advantage of some hesitant defending as he pounced on a loose ball by Che to rif le the ball past Jake Galea. Five minutes from the end of the first half, Sebastian Perdomo Esquivel doubled the score for the Blues with a powerful but precise shot in the top corner. Two minutes later, Michael Johnson added to his side's woes after the defender was given his marching orders for earning a second yellow card. Despite being one man down, St. Andrews pulled one back against the run of play. On the 70th minute, Lucky Visto Oseghale scored with a low drive after pouncing on a def lected shot by his Spanish teammate Jonathan Cuesta. But Sliema did not allow the temporary setback to derail them and the Blues went 3-1 ahead on the 75th minute after Njongo Priso concluded a solo effort by dribbling past two de- fenders before hitting a low shot past the St Andrews goalkeeper.
