maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 20 APRIL 2016 17 Events Emirates SkyCargo launches new protection solution for temperature-sensitive cargo EMIRATES SkyCargo, the cargo division of Emirates Airline, has launched a next-generation ver- sion of its innovative protection product for valuable temperature- sensitive cargo, including phar- maceutical products. Known as White Cover Advanced, it utilises DuPont's patented Tyvek® mate- rial made of high density polyeth- ylene to form a tough protective barrier against varying external temperatures and direct sunlight. The special material is water resistant to prevent moisture damage while at the same time remaining breathable, thereby reducing condensation and dry- ness. It is also environmentally friendly and 100% recyclable. The White Cover Advanced is an enhanced offering to Emirates SkyCargo's existing White Cover solution. While the White Cover is used in the carrier's cool chain solutions for perishables, such as vegetables and fresh fruits, the White Cover Advanced offers additional protection for pack- aged pharmaceutical shipments in controlled room temperature (CRT) range and in insulated packaging. "The pharmaceutical industry moves products worth over US$ 1 trillion annually. Temperature changes during transportation can pose a serious threat to the integrity of these sensitive prod- ucts," Henrik Ambak, Senior Vice President, Emirates' Cargo Op- erations Worldwide said. "They must be kept within dif- ferent control room temperature (CRT) bands in accordance with the revised EU Good Distribu- tion Practice. The White Cover Advanced, with its silver-coating technology, provides a reliable and affordable means of protect- ing these products from tempera- ture spikes during air transporta- tion," Ambak added. Emirates SkyCargo is a pioneer in the use of specialized covers to protect temperature-sensitive cargo and has worked with Du- Pont in developing applications of its Tyvek® material in the air cargo industry. The cargo carrier's range of ad- vanced protective techniques and solutions in transporting perish- able products include: Cool Chain Premium, Cool Chain Advanced and Cool Chain Standard, each of which is designed to meet specific requirements of customers. This includes the Emirates SkyCargo Cool Dolly, a special piece of equipment that transports cargo from the aircraft to cool storage areas, while maintaining temper- atures of as a low as -20°C. The cool chain portfolio is supported by Emirates SkyCargo's extensive temperature controlled handling facilities at both its freighter ter- minal in Dubai World Central's (DWC) at Al Maktoum Interna- tional Airport and its Cargo Mega Terminal in Dubai International Airport. With an established reputation for the highest standards of prod- uct quality in supporting busi- ness logistics, Emirates SkyCargo achieves customer satisfaction through innovation, flexibility and the constant refinement of service levels. In addition to belly hold cargo services on Emirates' fleet of 236 aircraft, Emirates SkyCargo has a fleet of 15 freight- ers, comprising 13 Boeing 777Fs and two Boeing 747-400 ERFs. Emirates operates daily sched- uled flights between Malta and Dubai. Emirates flies twice weekly to Malta, on Mondays and Wednesdays, via Larnaca in Cy- prus, and on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays the airline operates the Dubai - Malta route on a circular routing via Tunis in Tunisia. Alex Borg, a chartered train- er and consultant in logistics, transport and supply chain man- agement, shared the Maltese experience in framework and pol- icymaking in the import and ex- port context. His remarks focused particularly on the lack of unified regulations and its impact on the business, the various strategies to handle delay and rising costs of goods, as well as seamless infor- mation integration between sup- ply chain stakeholders to ensure security. Other speakers at the confer- ence included Amazon's Head of Supply Chain Dr Oliver Vogt, Scafom-Rux' COO Marc Mallant, Dubai Chamber's Atiq M. Juma, and many others. Their input was important as the Middle East is emerging as a global logistics hub. With such fast growing market the region needs to remodel its supply chain strategies and practices to meet the increasing volatility of cus- tomer demand, increasing cost pressure in logistics, increasing environmental concerns, and the overall supply chain inefficien- cies. Borg, who is the managing part- ner of Support and Supply Man- agement Group (SSM) and a key contributor to Malta's National Logistics Policy and Integrated Maritime Policy drafts, also pro- moted the TransLog events to the conference participants. Trans- Log events are organised by SSM and Maltese marketing commu- nications agency BPC Interna- tional. To date, TransLog events have included the 1st Transport Manager & Practitioners Forum (2014), the 1st TransLog Awards (2014), and the 1st Logistics Managers & Practitioners Forum (2015). The events aim to foster dialogue around Malta's potential in transport, logistics and supply chain.
