maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 15 JUNE 2016 20 Sport SPORTTODAY FOOTBALL Hungary overcome Austria in their Euro return Hungary managed to beat Austria in their first European Championship match since 1972 after goals from Szalai and Stieber completed their stunning victory WARREN ZAMMIT AUSTRIA started brilliantly as they quickly put Hungary under heavy pressure. After just 1 min- ute, Alaba was close to score the fastest ever goal in Euro Champi- onships history, but was denied by the post. Alaba was close again on the 10th minute when after receiving from Arnuatovic, he fired a first time shot that ended up in Kiraly's hand, the oldest goalkeeper that has ever played in the European Championships. Austria kept on showing their superiority in the attacking field on the 36th minute when Januzic shot towards the right hand cor- ner which produced an excellent save from the veteran Hungarian goalkeeper. With half time ap- proaching, Austria lost another golden opportunity on the 41st minute after Januzovic managed to beat Fiola before sending a low pass towards Harnik who mishits his shot and sends it out for a goal kick. Two minutes later, Hungary had their only opportunity on goal when Kleinheisler managed to beat Baumgartlinger in the middle of the pitch and charged forward before sending a lovely through-ball into the path of Dzsudzsák. However, the Hun- garian player's right foot shot ended up missing its intended target. During the second half, Hun- gary made considerable improve- ment and managed to test Almer after 55 minutes when Dzsud- skak fizzed a drive at goal forcing the Austrian goalkeeper to tip the ball behind for a corner. Hungary took the lead on the 62nd minute when Szalaia went through on goal and the striker squeezed his finish underneath the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. When they thought that they had found an equaliser, Austria suffered a huge setback after end- ing up with 10 men when Drago- vic picked his second yellow card. Knowing that they had an ex- tra man, Hungary tried to put the game to bed and were close on the 74th minute when Nemer fired a shot at goal which was tipped by Almer. With Austria putting more bod- ies forward, Hungary were finding more space and succeeded to seal the 3 points on the 89th minute when Stieber steamed through on goal and finished behind Almer. Following this result, Hungary managed to top group F with Por- tugal and Iceland playing later on this evening. French police have arrested 43 Russian fans suspected of being involved after stopping a bus in the Alpes-Maritimes region in the south of the country on Tuesday, ac- cording to local media reports. And UK police are also assisting the investigation into the Marseille melee by scouring CCTV, social media and press images to iden- tify any fans who were involved, the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) said. English fans suspect- ed of disorder could face court ac- tion when they return to the UK in the form of football banning orders, the NPCC spokeswoman warned. NPCC lead for football policing, Assistant Chief Constable Mark Roberts appealed for witnesses to send police any footage and said: "A number of images of those involved in disorder have been collated and work continues to identify those involved."
