JULY 21-23 Malta Jazz Festival The 26th edition of the Malta Jazz Festival – taking place at Ta' Liesse, Valletta from 20:00 – intends to create a vibrant jazz atmosphere all around Valletta. The events of Thursday night have been shifted from Ta' Liesse to Valletta centre with free con- certs featuring headliners. The festival also strives to reach out to wider and younger audiences. The programme for this sum- mer is highly eclectic and will feature a diversity of styles. JULY 22-31 Farsons Beer Festival Annual summer outdoor festi- val at the Ta' Qali National Park from 20:00. JULY 23 The Velts & heartsbeatingintime The Velts will be performing at The Funky Monkey, Manoel Is- land, Gzira at 21:00. With a DJ set by heartsbeatingintime (Uma Tee of Stolen Creep). Doors open at 21:00 and entrance is at €4. JULY 27-31 Malta International Music Competition 2016 Taking place at Mdina Local Council at 07:00, MIMC assists emerging pianists, violinists, gui- tarists, composers and chamber music ensembles in their artistic development, encourages them to pursue careers and to provide a forum for their talents. Young musicians of any nation invited to participate. EXHIBITIONS JULY 15-17 Sliema Arts Festival Festival of street art and music across the Sliema promenade. Featuring international and local artists, an array of music genres, street art, graffiti, art exhibi- tions, still art paintings, chalk art, street dancers and live per- formances. UNTIL AUGUST 31 What One Sees Is What One Is Exhibition by John Paul Azzo- pardi at the National Museum of Natural History, Mdina. In the artist's signature style of using animal bones and detritus to craft sculptures, it will be showcasing the Acherontia atropos (Death's- head Hawk moth). Admission fee to the Museum applies. THEATRE & PERFORMANCE UNTIL SEPTEMBER Rock of Ages: Opening Night Opening night of the Maltese version of the popular Broadway musical at City Theatre, Val- letta at 20:00. Directed by Nanette Brimmer. The first concert – Tlaqna Nghabbu – will be taking place between June 21 and 23; the sec- ond – Kuncert Bla Vat – between June 26 and 28 and Ghal Kbar Biss between August 23 and 25. Featuring Daniel Cauchi and the Big Band Brothers, Ray Calleja and Michael Spagnol. Malta International Arts Festival – Spotlight JULY 12 POW Ensemble Eclectic Danish troupe per- forming works inspired both by the works of Maltese writ- ers and composers as well as the literary output of the celebrated modernist writer Gertrude Stein.
