maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 20 JULY 2016 17 Events GasanMamo Insurance support one of their own in the ALIVE 2016 Cycling Challenge for Cancer GASANMAMO Insurance em- ployees hold to the notion that by lending a helping hand to the most vulnerable people in the community they are building better and richer lives. On the 24th June 2016, Max Borg Bonello – a manager at GasanMamo – cycled 84km in support of the ALIVE Charity Foundation 2016 Cycling Chal- lenge for Cancer. Max kicked- off his ride at 8am, spending the next six hours cycling between the GasanMamo branches lo- cated across Malta, to gather support and donations from colleagues for the charity cycle. The ALIVE 2016 Cycling Challenge for Cancer took place from the 7th to the 16th July. Max and 28 cyclists covered 1,100km of road, an ascent of over 12,000km and five coun- tries in just seven days to raise funds for children's cancer re- search. The challenge kicked- off from Zagreb, Croatia and concluded in the Vatican City. So far ALIVE has collected over €65,000 in donations. "It's wonderful to support one of our own for such a great cause like children's cancer research," said Julian J. Mamo, managing director at GasanMamo. "GasanMamo believes that corporations should give back to the community by raising awareness of the issues that af- fect society the most, and it's satisf ying to see our staff shar- ing this same ethos. Max had a big challenge ahead of him and he did really well. We are so proud of his achievement." GasanMamo Insurance also organised a summer themed event on the 21st of June where all employees, including those working at the branches, were asked to wear summer clothes for the day to welcome the sea- son and give a donation to the Alive Charity Foundation. ALIVE, a non-profit and non- governmental organisation, was set up by a group of like-minded individuals, who wanted to raise the bar on health awareness and pioneer scientific research in Malta. As outlined on their web- site, "ALIVE is the first Maltese charity foundation to raise pub- lic funds with the express aim of investing in medical research being carried out in Malta". In the first two years of operating, ALIVE has managed to donate over €135,000 to breast cancer awareness and research. GasanMamo is a big advocate of corporate social responsi- bility, the idea that by giving back to people they are helping to build a better community. www.gasanmamo.com Max Borg Bonello cycling for cancer research GSD Marketing contributes towards raising funds for Dar tal-Providenza FOR the sixth year running GSD Marketing Ltd, the distributor of Coca-Cola products bottled in Malta by The General Soft Drinks Co. Ltd, supported the fundraising volleyball marathon in aid of Dar tal-Providenza. The volleyball marathon last- ed for 56 hours and involved five teams with 40 professional players, who continuously com- peted against each other over the weekend, all in aid of a good cause. The activity was a great spec- tacle, especially for the loyal marathon fans who attend this event annually without fail. The Church-run home needs €4 mil- lion annually to run and sup- port its 110 residents as well as offering respite services to their families. "We feel it is our obligation to support such activities, which bring the elements of a team spirit within a sports environ- ment, whilst at the same time raising funds to ensure that people with special needs have the quality of life they deserve," GSD Marketing general manag- er Brian Galea said. "We manage to organize such a successful marathon and raise much needed funds to keep up- grading our facilities and ser- vices thanks to the support of our loyal sponsors," Fr Martin Micallef, director of Dar tal- Providenza, said. "They do not only help us raise the money, but they are also a leading example to other com- panies to encourage them in joining this concerted effort to give our beneficiaries the possi- bility to live their life beautifully and with dignity." Currently the home is work- ing on installing a therapeutic indoor pool as well as various upgrades in the other homes it serves in the community. "At GSD Marketing, the fun- damental pillars of our corpo- rate social responsibility are to contribute towards supporting the community we operate in, particularly for those who need more care and attention than others," said Martin Agius, sales and marketing manager at GSD.
