45 Events maltatoday, SUNDAY, 4 SEPTEMBER 2016 CELTA courses opens door for EFL careers ATTENDING the internation- ally-recognised CELTA teacher training course at IELS Malta gives you an all-access pass to teaching English anywhere in the world. The CELTA is a level 5 quali- fication designed for those with little or no English language teaching experience as well as more experienced teachers. All applicants are interviewed prior to acceptance on the course. "As someone who had never taught English before, I found the course a challenging yet reward- ing experience that helped me to grow not only as a teacher but al- so as an individual," said CELTA graduate and teacher of English at IELS Malta Laura Stanley. The CELTA course consists of training sessions delivered by ex- pert Cambridge-certified train- ers, observations and teaching practice in a real teaching con- text. A variety of teaching tech- niques, methodologies and ap- proaches are covered during the course providing the essential knowledge and skills needed to teach English. Sessions take the form of workshops, seminars and tutorials, encouraging trainees to gain a self-sufficient and au- tonomous approach to learning with both written and practical assessment. Course participants follow ex- perienced teachers with specific observation tasks to guide them and aid reflection upon their personal approaches to teach- ing. Participants experience an intensive yet highly practical and rewarding learning experience. Trainees have the opportunity to put knowledge into practice, reflect on their behaviours and refine their teaching techniques. Group feedback helps partici- pants develop awareness and creativity which, in turn, sup- ports development and fosters motivation. The course is ideal for people looking for a change of career, re- cent graduates, teachers looking to build on their current skills, those looking to start in the Eng- lish language teaching profession or even those wishing to combine English teaching with travel. Tina Anastasi, another CELTA graduate at IELS Malta said: "De- spite having taught for six years before doing the CELTA, the course broadened my awareness and I developed as a teacher. It opened doors to work and travel." Over 1.4 million kgs of organic waste separated in nine localities in less than nine months FAMILIES residing in the nine participating localities of the Or- ganic Waste Pilot Project have separated over 1.4 million kilo- grammes of organic waste in their homes since the project kicked off last October. This is equivalent to the weight of approximately 115 standard size buses. The pilot project falls under the remit of the Ministry for Sustain- able Development, the Environ- ment and Climate Change and is coordinated by Wasteserv Mal- ta. The localities of Birkirkara, Bormla, Għaxaq, Mdina and Ta' Xbiex were the first five localities to join in October 2015, followed by Kirkop, Marsaxlokk, Mġarr and Swieqi in January of this year. With Gozo scheduled to join the project on 30th September, collection rates of organic waste are bound to increase further, with multiple positive effects on the environment. Primary among these is the diversion of food waste away from the black bag and away from landfills. Re- cent studies found that roughly 50% of black bag waste in Malta is food related. The extension to Gozo also means that for the first time waste management will be tackled at regional level, since all Gozitan localities will be joining the project as a region. Interim results of the project show that participation has in- creased steadily not only in terms of organic waste but this has also had a positive knock-on effect on the amount of separated recycla- bles collected via the grey bag. This is partly attributed to the door to door educational cam- paign implemented prior to the introduction of the organic bag, through which residents were re- minded how to separate correctly all types of household waste. This interactive exercise also served as a feedback platform through which many positive comments as well as suggestions were received. This initiative is also supported by the Don't Waste Waste cam- paign which is creating awareness about good waste management at a national scale. Feedback received from resi- dents shows that a key ingredient for the success of the project is the type of receptacle chosen for the collection of this waste. The ventilated bins, distributed free of charge to all participating house- holds, are designed to slow down the waste degradation process and minimise the water gener- ated from waste, thus lessening odours in the home. Furthermore the small size of the bin means it can easily fit on the kitchen top, which was also appreciated by participating residents, par- ticularly those residing in small apartments. The free distribution of com- postable bags was also a com- mon point praised by many families. Should any households need more than the amount of bags provided, they can purchase compostable bags from any major supermarket. While all transpar- ent white bags are accepted and collected, the use of compostable bags is recommended since these are designed to minimise odours further when used together with the aerated bin, while the mate- rial itself is also more environ- ment friendly as it decomposes at a faster rate.
