The European Business Awards, now in its tenth year, attracted over 33,000 businesses from 34 European countries this year and the National Champions companies were selected after the first round of judging. Maria Micallef, Managing Partner of RSM in Malta said: "We are delighted that 15 businesses have been recognised in Malta for their success. They truly represent the excellence and innovation that our business community has to offer. The European Business Awards platform is an excellent showcase for businesses seeking to succeed beyond their traditional confines. We are working hard on fulfilling our ambition to become the natural, go-to professional services firm for medium sized, growth focussed companies to help them move forward with confidence." Adrian Tripp, CEO of the European Business Awards said: "Congratulations to all the talented businesses who have been selected to represent their country as National Champions. They are central to the success of Europe's strong business community, and have shown the core principles we look for of innovation, ethics and success." The next round requires the National Champions to make a presentation video, telling their unique story and explaining their business success. The Awards' independent judges will award the best of this group the 'Ruban d'Honneur' status and the selected companies will then go on to be part of the Awards Ceremony and Gala Event in 2017. Separately, in a two-stage public vote, the videos will be hosted on the European Business Awards website, and the company who receives the most votes in their country will become the 'National Public Champion'. Last year over 227,000 votes were cast as companies were supported globally by their clients, staff and peers, as well as the general public. The Maltese finalists are: AirX Charter Limited, AquaBioTechGroup, Business Leaders (Malta) Ltd, Camilleri Paris Mode, CasaSoft Ltd, Cloudlabs, Exigy, FIN Ltd, HalMann Vella Group p.l.c., NetRefer, OzoGroup of Companies Ltd, Parallels Malta, Pharma MT Ltd, STM Malta Trust and Company Management Limited, Wasteserv Malta Limited. RSM is the sixth largest network of independent audit, tax and consulting firms worldwide and has supported the European Business Awards since its inception. The Awards' core purpose is to support the development of a stronger and more successful business community throughout Europe. In the 2015/16 competition, all EU member markets were represented plus Turkey, Norway, Switzerland, Serbia and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Their combined revenue exceeded €1.2 trillion employing over 2.5 million people. Bayer offers $65 billion to buy Monsanto German multinational chemical and pharmaceutical giant Bayer raised its offer to buy Monsanto and cre- ate a new global leader in seeds and pesticides, though the German firm said the higher price depended on achieving a "negotiated transac- tion." Bayer said it was in advanced talks with Monsanto, but warned there was no guarantee a deal would result. Its initial offer of $122 a share in May was rejected by the US firm for being "financially inadequate." The record all-cash offer valued Monsanto at $62 billion. Bayer raised its offer to $125 a share in July but was again rebuffed. Combining Bayer and Monsanto would create the world's biggest agricultural supplier and be a market leader in the US, Europe and Asia. Bayer's farm business produces seeds as well as chemicals to combat weeds and insects, but it is better known for its healthcare products such as Aspirin and Alka- Seltzer. Monsanto is primarily known for its genetically modified seeds for crops including corn, soybeans, cotton, wheat and sugar cane. Such seeds have attracted criticism from some environmental activists. Werner Baumann, who took over as Bayer's chief executive just weeks before launching what would be the aspirin maker's biggest-ever acquisition, is pursuing the deal as rivals in the $100 billion global market for seeds and pesticides seal their own mergers. Baumann has faced pushback from some Bayer shareholders, however, who have worried about Bayer shifting focus away from its pharma division. The higher offer comes amid a wave of mergers in the agriculture sector. Rivals including Dow Chemical, DuPont and Syngenta have all announced tie-ups recently, although some have yet to be cleared by regulators. The drop in commodity prices has put pressure on companies such as Monsanto, with farmers' cutting orders for supplies. However, a Bayer takeover of Monsanto could raise US competition concerns because of the sheer size of the combined company and the control it would have over the global seeds and sprays markets. Farming groups have raised concerns that such mergers could lead to fewer choices and higher prices. Insiders said that although the two companies were close to reaching an agreement on price, they had yet to agree on a strategy on how to deal with potential regulatory hurdles. Shares in Bayer have fallen by close to a fifth this year and ended at €94.24 on Monday, valuing the company at €78 billion. Monsanto has risen 9% since the start of the year and closed on Friday at $107.44, making it worth just over $47 billion. Wall Street was closed on Monday for the Labor Day holiday.
