42 Events maltatoday, SUNDAY, 18 SEPTEMBER 2016 The art of science and the science of art in full display in Valletta In the era of hyper connectivity, arts provide the quiet of the soul that humans require and the upcoming Science in the City 2016 will trans- form an abundance of information into boundless fusion of science and humanities. Now in its fifth year, the Festival is the biggest attempt to date by the organisers to bring artists and scientists together and help each other cross the border between the two realms. Science in the City 2016 will be held on Friday 30th Septem- ber and runs with the theme of the 'Brain'. "Whether outside our studio or laboratory, by working outside our comfort zones we can spark new understandings and create new ide- as on artistic, scientific and social progress," said Angele Galea, artis- tic consultant of Science in the City 2016. "This year's festival is brim- ming with science related artistic works. For example, Valletta's St George's Square will be portrayed as the "Brain Square" and will fea- ture a cacophony of artworks and exhibitions." The activities at Brain Square in- clude a Kummettiva dance perfor- mance, which fuses traditional Mal- tese dance depicting movements of Alzheimer's disease performed by Paul Curmi Dance company; Brain- rave, where visitors will be able to control music and visuals just by thinking about it will be shown by artists and sound engineering An- drew Schembri and Toni Gialanzé; a larger than life model of the hu- man skull will showcase the evolu- tion of psychiatry by Mount Carmel Hospital; Raphael Vella's Cortex is an art installation inspired by neu- roscience and scientific compara- tive studies of different mammalian brains (created with the assistance of scientific adviser Prof Mario Val- entino); and Richmond Foundation will show an art exhibition by some of their members. Further up in Republic Street, a blindfolded dancer will be perform- ing Trust Me, an act inspired by the Romborg's Test. The test is typically undertaken to determine the limits of balance. This is a project of Mo- veo Dance Company. As interactivity is a hallmark of the Science in the City festivals, lit- tle brainiacs will be able to indulge in a variety of activities and games in Science at Spazju Kreattiv, St James Cavalier. Children 4+ can join the Kids Dig Science work- shops to learn how their brains sense the world at the Studio Room. The Cinema Room will host two puppet shows Inside Out at 6pm and 8pm and Marie Curie by S- Cubed at 7pm. Acclaimed group Teatru Anon will be performing I'm Still Here, one woman's battle with a life threatening condition – dementia. This will be performed at 6.30pm, 8.00pm and 9.30pm at the Theatre Room, St James Cavalier. While at the Cinema, CineXjenza will pre- sent the film Still Alice (on Alzhei- mer's disease) at 9.00pm followed by a discussion with Dr Charles Scerri. Funk Initiative, an alternative in- die art rock band, is recreating their work in an experimental perfor- mance called Cartographers, which is inspired by reflections of neurol- ogists, psychoanalysts, and poets. The first show starts at 8.00pm and repeated at 9.45pm at Pjazza Teatru Rjal. In between shows the audience can meet Gianluca Bezzina, Paul Torpiano, Shaun Abdilla, Chris- topher Tate, Luke Grech, Fabian Bonello, Daniel Buttigieg at Meet the Researchers (area 3a) At City Gate entrance, four an- thropomorphic sculptures will be displaying the evolution of the nervous system in different animals - artworks are by artist Liliana Fleri Soler. Science in the City festival - Euro- pean Researchers' Night coincides with 300 other events held across Europe and is organised by the Uni- versity of Malta, the Malta Cham- ber of Scientists, the University's Research Trust (RIDT) together with a number of partners. It is funded by the European Commission's Research and In- novation Framework Programme Horizon 2020 (H2020, 2014–2020) by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions and recognised as a Fes- tival by Europe for Festivals and Festivals for Europe (EFFE). The Żejt iż-Żejtun Marathon forms part of the FOOT: Fit On Olive Trails pro- ject and is one out of a series of four taking place in Italy, Greece, Slovenia and Malta respectively. They all form part of HOST: The Heritage of Olive Tree for Sus- tainable Tourism. These marathons aim to shed light on the cultivation of olives and the production of olive oil in aid of a more sustainable econ- omy; they also aim to promote the protection of our cultural and natural heritage. In fact, the marathon routes are all planned in a way that allows runners to visit various areas where olives are usually cultivated. Company 953 tonnes of paper saved through Yellow recycling programme The Yellow recycling pro- gramme is back once again for the 17th consecutive year. Every autumn since 1999, Yellow pre- viously known as Yellow Pages, recycles old copies of the printed book and distributes the new di- rectory. Yellow, collects a grand num- ber of 63,000 copies on average - these old directories are then shipped abroad for recycling. To date, the number of copies col- lected amount to 635,580 cop- ies which compares to 953 tons of paper saved from Malta and Gozo. This year, Yellow is going a step further. For every old directory collected for recycling purposes, €0.10 will be donated to Dar tal- Providenza. Yellow has been consistently recognized by Malta's Cleaner Technology Centre, for its ef- forts and accomplishments, and has been awarded an Honorable Mention in the Environment Award for Industry in 2007 and 2009 together with a Conserva- tion Award for Sustainable De- velopment in 2011. None of this progress would have been possible without the support of the Maltese and Gozi- tan public. With the joint effort of the brand and the public, Yel- low aims to make the islands a cleaner place to live in by en- couraging the recycling of the old directories. During the up- coming weeks, Yellow will be in- forming the public of the deliv- ery of the new directory through the use of f lyers. Both the direc- tories and the f lyers are printed on FSC paper which is derived from 100% managed forests.
