Farsons Foundation brings best of Travel Photographer of the Year to St James Cavalier A collection of stunning images from the interna- tional Travel Photographer of the Year awards (TPO- TY) is brought to Malta for the first time by The Far- sons Foundation, and host- ed at St James Cavalier in collaboration with Spazju Kreattiv. The exhibition is held as part of the inaugural cel- ebration of the new Beer Packaging Facility at the Farsons Brewery in Mrie- hel. Eighty fascinating travel photographs, which go beyond the usual holiday pic- tures and pretty postcards, will be ex- hibited at the upper galleries Space C1- C4 in Spazju Kreattiv St James Cavalier, Valletta, until 9th October 2016. Patrick J. Fenech is the curator of the exhibition. In addition to the TPOTY exhibition, The Farsons Foundation is showcas- ing key milestones in the creation and conservation of Simonds Farsons Cisk's industrial buildings and heritage. These include designs of Farsons' newly built €27 million Beer Packaging Facility (2016) designed by Farsons in-house ar- chitect Karl Borg; the €12.5 million Bre- whouse (2012) designed by Architecture Project AP; and the Beer Process Build- ing and Tank Farm (1990) designed by UK architectural firm Peake Short and Partners.; as well as the re-adaptation of Farsons 1950's buildings into a new Far- sons Business Park (2017-2020) designed by the international firm of Ian Ritchie Architects Ltd with the support of TBA Periti. "During the last 88 years, Farsons has built a tradition of investing in qual- ity industrial buildings. At The Far- sons Foundation, we embrace Farsons' conservation initiatives and believe in its contribution to the economic and social development of Malta," said Far- sons Foundation Chairman Mr Bryan A. Gera. "As part of the inauguration of the new Beer Packaging facility, The Far- sons Foundation is bringing for the first time to Malta a stunning selection of the Travel Photographer of the Year exhibi- tion, showcasing the intriguing power and beauty of travel photography. We are confident that the public will find this exhibition truly magical," added Mr Gera. Over the years, TPOTY (tpoty.com) has grown into one of the largest and most prestigious, international travel pho- tography competition. It has showcased thousands of beautiful, intriguing, mov- ing and inspirational photographs cover- ing every element of travel and related photographic genres. This retrospective, which is TPOTY's first international show outside the UK, comprises 80 of the very best images from the past 13 years of TPOTY awards. The TPOTY exhibition is held annually each summer in London, and the awards themselves attract many travel photogra- phers, both amateurs and professionals, from across the globe, including Malta. Each year, the awards showcase images of an exceptionally high standard and unique diversity, ranging from pictures of people, cultures, landscape to wildlife and adventure from around the world. Commenting on the TPOTY exhibition in Malta, curator Patrick J. Fenech said: "We invite the public to take their time to read the photographs and understand their contextual meaning and also reflect on the photographer's skills of harness- ing light and composing the right frame which bring out their creative skills and patience to capture the right moment." The place name Żejtun in its original Semitic connotation signifies the fruit of the olive trees and the cultivated olive tree, synonymous with the Mediterranean and popular since biblical times. As the place name indicates olive tree cultiva- tion and its by-products were a prime activity in the South Coast of Malta in the Punic and Ro- man era with Żejtun at its' centre. Over the years, especially with the Arab occupation of Malta at the end of the first millennium cotton gradually replaced the olive tree. In recent years, olive tree cultivation, olive pressing for oil and its' associa- tion with the healthy Mediterranean diet, have made a comeback. Żejt iż-Żejtun celebrates and commemorates all this. The event organized by the Żejtun Local Coun- cil will kick off on Saturday at 7.30pm with the BANDU announcing the event which will be followed by a defile of village folk and farmers on carts carrying the olive harvest for pressing. Drummers and flag bearers in medieval cos- tumes as well as folk singers and dancers will be present. Agricultural tools, typical agricultural products and folk art will be exhibited in the ambience of an old country village and fair. Pride of place will be given to the olive tree. Maltese ftajjar and bread dressed in freshly pressed olive oil will be distributed for free tasting. Olive tress and associated products will be on sale. An audio visual presentation will feature olive tree varie- ties and their proper cultivation. On Saturday all important historical and civic sites will be open to the public. A park and ride service will be available on Sat- urday from 7.00pm till midnight from Bulebel In- dustrial Estate near Inspire. Ample parking space will be provided in Żejtun itself. FAA's Cinema Under the Stars features Malta-set thriller 'Pulp' On Saturday 24th September 2016 Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar (FAA) invites the public to a 'Cinema Under the Stars' night, at the beautiful Villa Bologna Garden, where we shall show the 1972 British comedy thriller film Pulp, set up and shot in Malta. The performance by a young Michael Caine – playing the main character – is, of course, an unforgettable experience that is carried off with caustic wit, panache and style. Pulp is praised by critics as an 'unregarded gem', a 'comedy treat' that has 'much come- dic value' and is full of 'well derived one lin- ers'. However, what makes this movie a stun- ning cinematic classic, is the unique location on the Maltese Isles, bathed in russet colors and off beat charm. The location of the 'Cin- ema Under the Stars' night is similarly stun- ning: Villa Bologna is an 18th century Maltese country palace surrounded by lush gardens, in the pretty village of Attard (behind San Anton Gardens – please see the map and directions below). Before the screening Jean Paul Borg will be giving a few minutes of introduction on cine- matic background, while members of the orig- inal cast and crew will share their memories of their time on the Pulp film set. Doors open at 7pm and will be signposted for your convenience, film begins at 8pm. Food and drinks: available for purchase from the venue. BOOK YOUR TICKET HERE: https://tick- etengine.faa.org.mt/ or buy at the door • SPE- CIAL GROUP OFFER 8 + 1: bring along 8 friends and your entrance will be free of charge!
