maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 21 SEPTEMBER 2016 17 Events Contribute Water, Malta's first charity water finds support from Farsons THE pioneering social enterprise Contribute Ltd has finalised an agreement with Farsons to bot- tle and distribute its Contribute Water, Malta's first charity water, across the Maltese islands. Found- ed in 2013, by Janika, Nils and Karl Wijkmark, the young compa- ny is being supported by Farsons to further its social mission while also expanding its business. "The agreement with Farsons is a way for us to help build our brand by becoming more local and focused on even supporting local charitable projects and ini- tiatives," says one of Contribute's founders Janika Wijkmark. Con- ceived as a unique vehicle through which the young entrepreneurs could run a business while also doing social good, the concept rests on a donation being chan- nelled to a charity for every bottle of water sold. "It is a modern way of giving money to charity while carrying out everyday purchases, socializ- ing, or even working out. It's just about making the right choice," says Janika. After three years in business the company has managed to raise a rewarding amount of money for charity and in 2015 Contrib- ute built its own water pump in the village of Matulino in Ma- lawi through its partnership with Pump Aid, a UK based organi- zation, which works with rural communities in Africa and has delivered over 8,300 water and sanitation projects benefitting over 1.25 million people. This ini- tiative helped the community of 120 inhabitants to have access to clean water, making a significant difference to their lives. Michael Farrugia, Chief Busi- ness Development Officer, com- mented, "We are pleased to be supporting Contribute Water and its social mission which resonates with our own core values and fits within our CSR strategy." With the support of Farsons, Contribute Ltd will now work on expanding its brand and concept throughout the Maltese islands, with the company also looking into potentially introducing other charity inspired products in the future. Meet scientists and researchers at Science in the City MALTESE scientists will be sharing their experience with the public and answering any questions at the Casi- no Maltese (Republic Street) during the CERN, ALICE and the Universe presentations at the Science in the City event on September 30. CERN is the largest machine in the world and it is simultaneously the hottest and coldest place on Earth. CERN has a number of detectors or experiments that help make sure its discoveries are some of the soundest discoveries on the planet. This event is a mix of live video stream and dis- cussions starting at 6pm. The event is free of charge. The University of Malta has a solid research partnership with the AL- ICE experiment at CERN, which tries to recreate the conditions which existed in the Universe right after the Big Bang, known as Quark Gluon Plasma, by colliding highly energetic particles together. In the live interactive video stream with CERN scientists, one can learn how the LHC accelerates and collides highly energetic particle beams, and how the physicists work around the clock in order to take measure- ments of the collisions. Visitors will get a chance to pose questions to the CERN scientists in Malta at the 10pm Malta meets ALICE activity. The National Museum of Ar- chaeology (Republic Street) will be hosting two 30-minute activities on conservation and restoration of paintings for children at 7pm and at 8pm. These would be followed by two other activities for adults at 9pm and 10pm focusing on restoration of archaeological artefacts. The Mu- seum will also be open to visitors, entrance will be free of charge. Children and adults alike can also enjoy interactive activities related to famous scientists and inventors at the EU Corner set up by MEUSAC at the City's entrance. They can al- so meet researchers to get to know about their latest findings. More researchers will be meet- ing the public at the Science Fair between City Gate and Ordinance Street. Researchers will be available at the health and rare diseases area, while at the DNA for life stand, sci- entists will show how genetics is be- ing used to battle a host of diseases. Visitors will be able to extract DNA and see how it is separated and stud- ied. Researchers and students will be in the area for a chat in the hands-on station and for career advice. To sup- port these studies a Malta BioBank will be available to store samples for research around Europe. The mobile dental clinic (Faculty of Dental Surgery + RIDT) will be in Ordinance Street as part of its national survey on oral health while providing advice and dental care for free. Also, at the Science Fair, the In- stitute of Space Sciences & Astron- omy (ISSA) will be setting up an interactive stand and exhibition to demonstrate the principles behind Einstein's theory of General Relativ- ity. This does not end here, as they will also explain how this theory has been tested in the last century, including through intriguing phe- nomena such as light bending, grav- itational lensing and gravitational red shift. The best of Malta Café Scientifique brings the most exciting talks of this popular series to Science in the City, at the Music Room, St James Cava- lier. At 7.30pm Mike Rosner will dis- cuss "Machine Learning X'inhu?". At 8.30pm, Dr Janet Mifsud and Dr Anna Micallef will discuss Brain Oscillations in Epilepsy. Dr Aaron Micallef will finish off from 9.30pm, talking about the deep sea fresh- water reservoirs found around the Mediterranean. European Researchers' Night, Sci- ence in the City is organised by a consortium led by the University of Malta, the Malta Chamber of Scien- tists, and the University's Research Trust (RIDT) together with a num- ber of partners. It is mainly funded by the Euro- pean Commission's Research and Innovation Framework Programme Horizon 2020 (H2020, 2014–2020) by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie ac- tions and recognised as a Festival by Europe for Festivals and Festivals for Europe (EFFE). Science in the City is supported by the Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth & Sport, University Research Trust (RIDT), Jugs Malta, Studio 7, MEUSAC, MCST, Valletta Local Council, MCAST, PBS, Notte Bi- anca, Spazju Kreattiv, Pjazza Teatru Rjal, and General Soft drinks with Coca Cola. The programme can be viewed on www.scienceinthecity.org.mt or follow the festival on Facebook for regular updates: www.facebook. com/ScienceInTheCityMalta The National Museum of Archaeology (Republic Street) will be hosting different sessions on conservation and restoration of paintings for children and for adults Emirates SkyCargo unveils new purpose-built pharma facility EMIRATES SkyPharma, Emir- ates SkyCargo's new purpose-built facility dedicated exclusively to the timely and secure transport of temperature-sensitive pharmaceu- tical shipments at Dubai Interna- tional Airport (DXB) was officially inaugurated by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group.
