One evening in 1995 she and her partner Tatsuhiro Boku waited until Aoki's 11-year-old daughter fell asleep. Then they burnt their house down. She confessed to the murder and was sentenced to life in prison. Only, she didn't do it. In October 2015 the Osaka High Court released both Aoki and Boku pending a retrial after their lawyers were able to provide convincing evidence that the fire was most likely accidental. A spate of overturned convictions over the past few years have exposed serious flaws in Japan's squeaky-clean criminal justice system. The country has a staggering 99.8 percent conviction rate. While this figure could reflect a reluctance of prosecutors to pursue weak cases, experts argue that career-driven policemen, prosecutors and judges are exploiting loopholes in the law to secure convictions. However, with advances in forensic and DNA technology, an increasing number of wrongful convictions are coming to light, proving that innocent people have been incarcerated, sometimes for life.
