maltatoday, SUNDAY, 16 OCTOBER 2016 17 MIRIAM DALLI EDUCATION minister Evarist Bartolo yesterday said that edu- cators should not spread hate. He made his comment after ac- tivist Alex Caruana was targeted for being transgender by Ghaqda Patrijotti Maltin exponent and University of Malta lecturer Ste- phen Florian. The self-proclaimed Maltese 'patriots' targeted the 27-year- old activist after Caruana was one of three activists who on Sunday showed up at a protest by the Ghaqda Patrijotti Mal- tin (GhPM), urging protesters to stop inciting hatred and disunity in Malta. Yesterday, a homophobic post by lecturer Stephen Florian on the Facebook page of the GhPM, targeted Caruana. "Time we got to know who Alex Caruana really is and was," Stephen Florian posted on Face- book. "This girl who now calls her- self Alexander, was one of the three atheists who came to photomob [sic] the MPM Bugibba protest and the same one who on Xara- bank, blundered in her numbers when stating garbled data about the 'billions' of Muslims living in Malta and worldwide," the GhPM exponent said. Florian went on to comment on Carua- na's affiliation with Moviment Graffitti, a left-wing move- ment which is vo- cal on issues such as human rights, political transpar- ency and the envi- ronment. He also targets Alternat- tiva Demokratika and Mario Mal- lia, a green party spokesperson. In a Facebook post, education minister Evar- ist Bartolo wrote: "The attack by the so-called patriots on Alex Caruana and others who champion re- spect towards different cultures and religions is absolutely unac- ceptable." In a clear reference to Florian, he added "the role of an educa- tor should be that of civilising and not spreading hate based on race, religion and gender." The Florian post said that "the picture attached shows the Caruana's link to Graffitti which now is in direct alliance with Al- ternattiva Demokratika, where Mario Mallia comes from. AD which is almost defunct needs new blood. Now you can make your own deductions." AD chairperson Arnold Cas- sola said that the shameless hatred spread against Caruana was despicable. "Unacceptable, when coming from people who have had little chances in life; very worrying for the future of the country when coming from someone who has had a sound cultural and educational forma- tion," Cassola said. Florian's comments have been denounced by several on so- cial media, with many taking to Caruana's Facebook to express their solidarity and support. Commenting on the post, Caru- ana questioned the relevance be- tween his gender and the argu- ments being brought by GhPM in their opposition for new prayer rooms. "When no arguments are left, people launch personal attacks," Caruana commented, adding that such comments only proved that GhPM knows only hatred. "We must unite to show that this island is for peace and respect."
