Jobsplus permit number 497/2016 Financial farce puts a twist on family fun Lewd, lasagna-enhanced show from Steve Hili coming our way THE next theatrical production to emerge from Stagun Teatru Malti will poke fun at the Maltese family unit, being a farce that takes a lot- tery win as its starting point. Written and directed by Mario Philip Azzopardi and staged at the Manoel Theatre, Irbaht Il-Lottu gets rolling when a father hits the jackpot at the local lottery. Decid- ing that it would be best to keep the win a secret for as long as possible so as to avoid any problems arising from money-grubbing relatives, the situation spirals into farcical hilarity for the Buttigieg family. Starring Chris Spiteri, Lorraine D'Ugo, Simon Curmi, Mariele Zammit, Jamie Cardona, Vince Micallef Pule, Marvic Cordina and newcomer Mia Ebeyer, together with Narcy Calamatta, the play is also heavily indebted to cinema when it comes to its visual presen- tation – a fact that its writer-direc- tor does not shy away from. "I don't see this as a minus. Any- thing but. We have experimented with a new style of presentation and content in a production where the two are intrinsically joined at the hip, each aspect pushing the other towards an original theatri- cal entertainment easily under- stood and digested by an audience whose primary source of informa- tion, leisure and also education, is a screen, on which filmed content is streamed/projected," Azzopardi said. He added that "consciously avoiding such an everyday reality does not help with the evolution of theatre". "Depending only on centuries old conventions does more to harm new interest in the theatre than help it. It is a constant search in which the audience's interests have to be in the centre of atten- tion and must be the fulcrum of the effort." Irbaht Il-Lottu will be staged at the Manoel Theatre, Val- letta on Octoberr 28-30 and November 4-6, with mati- nees on both respective Satur- days. To the ground' is heading to Malta next month. The comedy dubbed "an interac- tive show with lasagna" was called 'Perfect', 'hilarious and eye-open- ing' by review website Arts Awards Voice and in it, the London-based Maltese stand-up comedian takes on the notion of 'love' in his unique high-energy style with a frantic mix of real-life experience, naughty observations, dodgy sci- ence and his favourite food. Steve, who has been described by world-famous VICE magazine as having "The energy of a dog who needs to be taken out" explains - 'People have been asking the ques- tion "what is love?" since the be- ginning of history. So it was about time someone cracked it. Human- ity can thank me later'. Lasagne plays a big role in the show - in fact, audience members are offered some at the end, but that is not all. One of the most fa- mous models of all time also takes part. Kind of. Burning Love. To the ground. is being produced by TAC Theatre, hot on the tail of their critically- acclaimed summer rock musical Rock of Ages. Producer Wesley Ellul said "producing Steve's hi- larious and insightful one-man show was an absolute no-brainer. I'm absolutely sure Burning love. To the ground. will be a will be a hit with local audiences, not only because it will cause LOLs, ROFLs and PMLs, but also it will leave them asking the question Hadda- way asked in the 90s: "what is love?" Burning Love. To the ground. will be performed at Palazzo Perei- ra, Valletta, between the 3rd and 6th November. Tickets, starting from only €10, are available from- www.ticketline.com.mt or from The Embassy Cinema Box office in Valletta. Steve Hili
