Camorra informer turned fugitive arrested in Malta MAT THEW AGIUS LAW YERS for an Italian fu- gitive suspected of belong- ing to a Camorra clan who was arrested in Malta on the strength of a European Arrest Warrant are expected to ap- peal an order for her extradi- tion. Donatella Con- cas, 40, living in Mosta, was a r r e s t e d after her name ap- p e a r e d on a S c h e n - g e n I n f o r - m a t i o n S y s t e m alert. She had been sen- tenced to three years, eight months imprisonment in 2015 by a Venetian court, for participating in organised crime, usury, extortion and illegal possession of weapons. Concas' law yer, Malcolm Mifsud, told magistrate An- tonio Micallef Trigona that the woman had f led Italy in fear for her life after testif y- ing against members of the mafia who now wanted to kill her. Inspector Herman Mula, prosecuting, argued that she did not want to return to Italy just to avoid prison. Italian news reports say Concas was convicted of involvement in mafia-type crimes, forming part of the main gang in the Veneto re- gion, between 2009 and 2011. The reports say she is a member of a "clan of the C a m o r r a " , who took a d v a n - tage of s e v e r a l e n t r e - p r e - n e u r s ' n e e d s , p r o - v i d i n g r e a d y c a s h against usu- rious interest rates. But after her con- viction, Concas had disappeared without a trace for more than a year and it was only after what was termed as "extensive techni- cal investigations," was Con- cas traced to Malta territory. After the court upheld the extradition order, Mifsud informed the court that he would be contesting it. Man robbed of 'considerable amount of cash' JEANELLE MIFSUD A man was robbed of the money he carried in his pockets as he made his way to his field early yesterday morning, according to a police re- port. Police sources said that the 47-year-old Mgarr resident had filed a report at the Mosta police station at 4:30am, alleging that he was as- saulted and robbed by three men on Burmarrad Road, St Paul's Bay. The assailants reportedly stole a considerable amount of cash. The man also sought medical treatment for wounds sustained from the assault at the Mosta health centre, where it was later declared that he was suffering from grievous injuries. Duty magistrate Caroline Farrigia Frendo ordered an inquiry into the case. Police investigations are still un- der way. Water Services Corporation ordered to pay hotel €55,000 for sewage overflow MAT THEW AGIUS THE Water Services Corpora- tion has been ordered to pay a Gozo hotel €54,912 in damages after a storm overloaded the island 's sewerage system, caus- ing it to overf low and f lood the ballroom of the Grand Hotel in Ghajnsielem, resulting in con- siderable damages. Belmont, the company that runs the hotel, had filed a lawsuit before the Court of Magistrates in Gozo, in its superior jurisdic- tion, claiming that it had been chasing the WSC to improve the sewerage infrastructure in the area, which had already been at capacity, due to the construc- tion of 60 new apartments. Magistrate Joanne Vella Cuschieri heard that, despite the fact that the system had already overf lowed in 2005 and em- ployees of the corporation had been summoned to inspect the damages suffered by the hotel, no compensation had been paid and the hotel had repaired the damage at its own cost. A court-appointed expert had evaluated the damages at €55,000, which the court up- held. It turned down a request by the hotel 's operators for prof- its lost as a result. This decision was prompted by the plaintiff 's failure to bring evidence of the amount, despite them easily be- ing calculated. A request for the court to order that improvement works on the sewerage infrastructure in the area be carried out was with- drawn as the WSC had done so in the interim. Jail confirmed for bus driver charged with minor's corruption Prison sentence for former Public Transport Association president Victor Spiteri confirmed on appeal on charge of corruption of minor in 2009 MATTHEW AGIUS THE one-time chief of the former bus drivers' union ATP (public transport association), Victor Spiteri, had a four-year prison sentence for a sordid sexual rela- tionship with a minor, confirmed on appeal. In addition to the prison sen- tence, 55-year-old Spiteri had his licence to transport children sus- pended for 10 years, and a three- year protection order was also is- sued in favour of the girl and her parents. The case dates back to August 2009 when the girl was just 15. She had revealed to a boyfriend that when she was 12, Spiteri had made sexual advances to her. Although she had initially resisted, a year later she caved in to his demands and accepted to meet him. A raun- chy sexual relationship developed, with the pair engaging in lustful activities on the man's bus, at his house and even in his ATP office. Spiteri denied the charges, claiming to have just kissed her because the minor had wanted to go steady with him. The courts had seen an expert's report listing 12,539 phone calls made from the girl's mobile phone to Spiteri, and 4,930 calls that she received from the man. In a sentence handed down on Monday evening, the Court of Appeal presided by Mr Justice Giovanni Grixti noted that the appellants had argued the convic- tion should be declared null as the girl's version was not credible. But the judge pointed out that the Court of Appeal was not al- lowed to disturb the court of first instance's evaluation of the evi- dence. In addition, it held that the four- year prison sentence was within the parameters laid down by law. The appellant's arguments were not a valid reason for the court to change its sentence, the judge said. Donatella Concas Victor Spiteri denied the charges and claimed he only kissed the underage girl
