21 Sport FOOTBALL maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 26 OCTOBER 2016 Watford face inquiry over 'forged' letter THE allegations, reported in the newspaper, focus on Gino Pozzo's takeover of the Hornets in 2014, when he assumed complete con- trol from his father Giampaolo. The Daily Telegraph article claimed a forged banking let- ter was supplied shortly before the club's 2014/15 promotion- winning campaign, showing that 'Pozzo had enough funds to bankroll Watford' and which allowed the Italian to take to- tal control of the Hertfordshire team. The article describes how the alleged fabricated letter appeared to be from global banking gi- ant HSBC, who have since been shown a copy of the document. The Telegraph report says there is nothing to indicate Gino Pozzo himself had any knowledge that a forged HSBC letter had been obtained or submitted on his be- half. An EFL spokesman said: "We can confirm, following receipt of information from the Daily Telegraph, that we immediately commenced a disciplinary inves- tigation into serious allegations made against Watford Football Club. "The club has been formally contacted by the EFL and is now required to provide a full and de- tailed response to the allegations. "Once that response is received, it will be fully considered by the EFL and appropriate action will be taken under our rules and regulations. "We will not be making any fur- ther comment until we are in re- ceipt of the club's response." If Watford are found guilty of falsifying documents they could face a heavy fine and a possible points deduction. The club released a statement to the Telegraph, saying: "There are two ongoing investigations. It would be inappropriate to com- ment further until those investi- gations reach completion. Giampaolo Pozzo (C) with son Gino (L) and Watford's former technical director Gianluca Nani (R) Wolves sack Walter Zenga WOLVES have sacked boss Walter Zenga after less than three months in charge Wolves have lost four of their last five games, drawing the other, leaving them 18th in the Champi- onship. First team coach Rob Ed- wards has been put in temporary charge. The Italian was appointed on 1 August, and he won just four of his 14 matches in charge. Their latest defeat was a 1-0 reverse at home to Leeds United on Saturday. The club's board sacked his pre- decessor Kenny Jackett in July. In a statement the club said: "Wolves have announced that Walter Zenga's contract has been terminated with immediate effect. "Stefano Cusin, assistant head coach has also left the club. Wolves will be conducting a thorough pro- cess to recruit a new head coach and won't be revealing any time- scales associated with this impor- tant task. "Rob Edwards, first-team coach, has been placed in interim charge of the first team, supported by U23s coach, Scott Sellars. "The club would like to extend their thanks and best wishes to Walter and Stefano for their con- tribution to Wolves during the season so far. Wolves will be mak- ing no further comment at this stage." Zenga is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers the game has seen, winning 58 caps for Italy between 1987 and 1992. But his management career has been less successful. He has had spells in America, Italy, Turkey, Romania, the Middle East and now England. He had some initial success in Romania and Serbia, winning the domestic titles in both countries, and he guided Catania to mid- table in Serie A. But he was then sacked by Palermo, Saudi Arabian side Al-Nasr and also Sampdoria. Brazil legend Carlos Alberto dies aged 72 BR AZIL legend Carlos Alberto, the captain of the 1970 World Cup-winning side, has died aged 72. Widely regarded as one of the finest defenders of all time, Carlos Alberto is most fondly remembered for scoring the stunning fourth goal in Bra- zil 's 4-1 final win over Italy at Mexico 1970. A sublime team move, that concluded with a thunderous finish after Pele rolled a pass nonchalantly into the right- back 's path, sealed a third world title for Brazil, allowing them to keep the Jules Rimet Trophy that Carlos Alberto hoisted at the Estadio Azteca. Right-back Alberto was capped 53 times by Brazil and won domestic titles with Flu- minense and Santos, for whom he made more than 400 appear- ances. He died in Rio de Janeiro fol- lowing a heart attack. Carlos Alberto
