maltatoday, SUNDAY, 30 OCTOBER 2016 44 This Week The lentisk is a large evergreen shrub ideal for our dry climate. Indeed, wherever remnants of old-growth maquis survive around the Mediterranean, lentisk (M: deru) is often one of the dominant vegetation species. Malta too had many such lush thickets once, but people cleared them virtually all, for firewood or to make space for pasture and agriculture; and their goats ensured the vegetation never recovered. Now the goats are largely gone and in places the hardy lentisk is making a gradual comeback. Woodland projects can speed up the recovery process: at Foresta 2000, for example, several thousand lentisk shrubs have been planted, and it's heart-warming to watch patches of thick maquis reforming. Lentisk are prolific berry-bearers and although still in their teens, the shrubs at Foresta 2000 are already providing shelter and rich pickings for tired and hungry birds coming in from the sea. GREEN IDEA OF THE WEEK 433: USE BOTH SIDES OF PAPER: For a quick and easy way to halve this, set your printer's default option to print double-sided (duplex printing). And when you're finished with your documents, don't forget to take them to the recycling bin. LENTISK Stop squeezing out the orange juice workers Kids are in for a Dahl delight at Ziguzajg THRILLINGLY spectacular circus skills blend seamlessly with charm, physical comedy, clowning, juggling, theatrical storytelling and slapstick in Hogwallops, a colourful, loud and funny dramatisation of the domestic adventures of a chaotic, dysfunctional family of misfits. Presented as part of this year's edition of Ziguzajg by UK-based troupe Lost in Translation, this all-ages pro- duction will be staged at the Catholic Institute, Floriana on November 18 at 12:30 and 18:00 and November 19 and 20 at 18:00. Inspired by Roahl Dahl's The Twits and Ettore Scola's film Bruti, Sporchi e Cattivi (Ugly, Dirty and Bad), The Hogwallops is a treat for the eyes and ears. The hilarious family's antics create a crazy home that resembles an ad- venture playground where riotous, anarchic fun prevails. Everyday activities become triggers for mayhem, simple tasks like hanging out the washing become a tangle of swinging, flying bodies and fabric. Dinner-time becomes a teasing game of animalistic juggling and baking takes on dangerous proportions that would appal Mary Berry as the household furniture is precariously stacked and bal- anced on the roof.
