This fan- tastic initiative, a joint venture be- tween Inspirasia Foundation and The Gasan Foundation, aims to bring the private and non-profit sectors together to offer opportuni- ties for financial and non-financial support to develop and see to frui- tion a project that will have a posi- tive social impact on Malta. Following an overwhelming num- ber of applications received back in July, the shortlisted five finalists each gave a short presentation of their proposed project to a panel of judges and audience in a bid to raise the fund they need to imple- ment their projects. From prevent- ing self-harm and suicide to helping vulnerable women on the street to dance classes for those suffering with Parkinson, these projects all aim to improve Maltese society and someone's standard of living. Inspi- rasia Founder Mark Weingard said, "With these awards we have striven to recognize non-profit organisa- tions and individuals who submit innovative, social projects that can solve some social issues for Malta." All the finalists also received non-financial support in the shape of mentoring services by some of the movers and shakers within Malta's business community in order to help develop the projects and prepare the perfect pitch. In the end the two winners were the Dar Hosea walk in centre for vul- nerable prostituted women which aims to offer safe place submitted by St Jeanne Antide Foundation and the Neighbourhood watch project which will now launch schemes to create safer communi- ties submitted by Victim Support Malta. These awards are the fruits of collaboration between Maltese businesses foundations and trusts which awarded grants and profes- sional services to the best and most effective submissions. The event also aimed at encour- aging other businesses and individ- uals to support projects they liked. Some of the other projects that did not win grants through the Awards were approached by people from the audience also showing interest in supporting their project. This proved to be a successful initiative and one that plans to be held yearly to become a sustainable and bigger event to offer more funding oppor- tunities and non-financial support. The next Social Impact Awards will be held in May 2017. Anyone interested to submit a social project or any businesses and individuals wishing to support the event can contact Ms Attard on louisa@in- spirasia.org For more information on the awards, the finalists and the next edition of awards please visit www. socialimpactawards.inspirasia.org Dar Hosea – Walk-in Centre - St Jeanne Antide Foundation The project looks at women trapped in a life of street-based prostitution as victims of gender- based violence and hence offers them access to a range of supports such as facilities to meet basic needs, guidance on self-care and self-development, sexual health education and harm reduction screening as well as social work support and non-formal education. Won a grant of €44,000 and non- financial support from PWC Suicide and Self-Harm Prevention - Crisis Resolution Malta The project aims at setting up a 24/7 crisis lines at suicide hotspots across Malta and Gozo to help save lives and creating a national crisis management course to help iden- tify those at risk of mental illness and self-harm. Step Up For Parkinson's - Natalie Muschamp The project's concept is to estab- lish ongoing dance courses in Mal- ta focused on helping People with Parkinson's (PWP). The project's primary aim is to create an annual, two-week international training program in Malta in which PWPs are monitored by specialists to fur- ther research within the field. Project WO (Watch Out) Phase I - Victim Support Malta This project aims to encourage community-building and social en- gagement at the grassroots level by setting up Neighbourhood Watch schemes, through the provision of specialised training. Project WO seeks to address the twin issues of crime and social disengage- ment through the establishment of Neighbourhood Watch (NW) schemes. Won a grant of Eur7,500 and non-financial support from ICON and PWC. Pregnancy Outreach – The Help Line - LifeNetwork Foundation Malta The project aims to be there - to counsel, to advice and to give ma- terial assistance to women facing difficult situations related to preg- nancies. The project aims to set up an institutional structure designed to guide and assist a woman fac- ing a crisis pregnancy from the moment that the first call of help arises, through the term of preg- nancy and the actual birth, to the earliest phases of the mother-child relationship. THE Tobacco Industry Advisory Council (TIAC) believes that smok- ing in cars with minors creates dan- gers that need to be addressed. In this context, the reported initiative by the Ministry of Health, to estab- lish a ban on smoking in vehicles where children are present, is fully supported by the Council. The Tobacco Industry Advistory Council said it believes that an on- going cooperation with the appro- priate health authorities can ensure an orderly management of the mar- ket. The Council is in full agreement with the Government's Youth Smoking Prevention programmes, as these reflect the over-riding belief that the choice of whether to smoke or not is one to be made by adults freely and without imposition. The Tobacco Industry Advisory Council is a grouping of the main players in the tobacco industry in Malta established in 1990. Its mem- bers include British American To- bacco (Malta) Limited, a member of the British American Tobacco (BAT) Group, with brands sold in over 180 countries. Also, member of the Tobacco Industry Advisory Council is Salvo Grima Group, the leading distributor of tobacco prod- ucts in Malta. Tobacco lobby supports smoking ban in vehicles with children Henry Naudi, associate at Dingli & Dingli law firm, and Ezgi Harmanci, managing director Condico Consulting, at the Social Impact Awards
