During a press conference at the Bormla Regatta Club, Parliamentary Secretary for Sports Chris Agius expressed his apprecia- tion toward local athletes who dedicate sub- stantial time of their free time to the promo- tion of sports in Malta. "The result of such dedication can be clearly seen when one looks at the number of participating teams in this event, which has doubled over the course of a year. Whilst in last year's edition the tourna- ment was played by four teams, this year sees four foreign teams and three Maltese teams battling it out on the Cospicua waters." The parliamentary secretary further ex- plained how fitting it is that a tournament which is gaining momentum is held at such a spectacular site as the Dock 1. "As a resi- dent of Cospicua and as Maltese I am proud to host foreign athletes in this locality and I am sure the Maltese entourage will make us proud," he said. The press conference was also addressed by federation president Chris Camilleri, who explained how the Malta Open is gathering momentum with foreign teams, particularly those coming from neighbouring countries. "Whilst the game of Canoe Polo has been practised locally for several years, it was after last year's edition of the Canoe Sports Fes- tival that there was a large increase of fresh interest which also resulted in the birth of a new club." For this edition the island will host teams from Catania, Syracuse and Palermo whilst Malta's two clubs – the Malta Canoe Polo Club and the Cospicua Canoe Polo Club – will be fielding three teams. During this year's edition the spectators will also be treat- ed to a number of racing displays by the Malta Canoe Racing Club and those in the audience who would like to try out the different canoe disciplines can give it a try on site. It was through the help of the Parliamentary Secretary for Sport that Malta saw the birth of Malta's second Canoe Polo club, which will also be fielding a team for this tournament. Camilleri expressed his appreciation at the constant help and support given by the Par- liamentary Secretary for the organisation of this event. The Festival will kick off on Saturday 12th at 9am with the first game of the tournament seeing a local team face off one of the Italian clubs. The event will run all day Saturday and through Sunday with the highlight of the pro- gramme being the final of the tournament. Entrance for the tournament and trying of the various disciplines is completely free.
