You don't see many spiders in the cooler months as there's precious little prey about for them to catch. Many spiders therefore spend winter in a semi-torpid state (basically asleep). Some days ago I needed to lift a small log and lo and behold, lurking underneath I found a magnificent specimen of woodlouse spider, with the unmistakeable red-brown front part contrasting with the pale brown abdomen. No prizes for guessing what this spider eats, with a giveaway name like that. Woodlice – those cute bugs that roll into a grey ball – are not much sought after as food items thanks to their armour-plated body. But the woodlouse spider (M: brimba tal- ħanżir l-art) has the perfect cutlery for the job: a fearsome pair of fangs that easily penetrate the woodlouse's armour and immobilise the animal. The spider then proceeds to suck the poor pill-bug dry: the perfect winter smoothie. It is committed to ensuring social and climate justice. Friends of the Earth US president Erich Pica said that the majority of Americans reject Donald Trump's extremist agenda. That's why he lost the popular vote by almost 3 million voters. We will fight against normalizing his vision in the US, as well as globally.
