maltatoday, SUNDAY, 26 FEBRUARY 2017 16 Carnival Political satire takes centre PN president Ann Fenech's troubled relationship with pastizzi, a naked Angela Merkel and Konrad Mizzi are among the protagonists of this year's carnival, as political satire once again dominated the floats on display in Valletta. A float sponsored by Malta's EU presidency also took centre stage. The float, which is the result of a collaboration between British cartoonist Steve Bell, the Cicco Carnival Company and the Malta Arts Council, shows a naked German chancellor Angela Merkel surrounded by French President Francois Hollande, Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and British Prime Minister Theresa May holding her flamboyant foreign secretary Boris Johnson tight to her chest. Thousands joined in the fun in Valletta yesterday and the fairly good weather is expected to hold throughout the weekend. Yesterday, big crowds attended the traditional, colourful floats defile with dancers from rival companies fighting it for top prize in St George's Square before King Carnival led the parade of colourful floats. Today, the festivities will start off with a band parade in the morning in Hamrun and then will be followed by a float parade in Valletta in the afternoon. The climax of the activities is reached on Tuesday evening with the grand finale taking place in St Anne Street, Floriana.
