44 Events maltatoday, SUNDAY, 26 MARCH 2017 The Na- t i o n a l B o o k C o u n c i l will host the Book F e s t i v a l on Campus 2017 at the University of Malta on the 4-5-6th of April, starting 10:00 hours and continu- ing till late. The publishers and distributors participating in the festival are Horizons, Faraxa Books, Sensiela Kotba Socjalisti (SKS), Ede, Kotba Calleja, and BDL, some of whom will be setting up events of their own. Among these we find Ho- rizons who will launch a poetry collection by Prof. Kenneth Wain, entitled 'Who looks at the sun any- more' and Faraxa who have also prepared a poetry evening. Kotba Calleja will be holding two work- shops on the art of book binding. Apart from the publishers and book distributors, other partici- pants in the Festival have con- tributed to the programme. The poetess Miriam Calleja will lead a workshop on the topic of creative writing which is open to all writers of all levels. The event will involve a number of exercises and games, prompts and guidelines, as well as advice on how to improve one's writing. The event will close with a reading of Calleja's poetry both in English and in Maltese. Other events of academic interest include 'Il-Malti u l-Barranin', set up by Kunsill Nazzjonali tal-Lsien Malti, where a number of people who studied Maltese as a foreign language will talk about what motivated them to learn Maltese and why Maltese of all the languages in the world, and 'X'naqbad ngħid?', a talk and dis- cussion on linguistic variations in Maltese, which will be led by Mi- chael Spagnol. The special guest of the festival is Caroline Smailes, the renowned author of In Search of Adam, Like Bees to Honey, 99 Reasons Why and The Drowning of Arthur Braxton, which is currently being made into a film. Caroline Smailes, who is of Mal- tese descent, was born in Newcas- tle and has studied creative writ- ing. During the festival she will be leading workshops on the sub- jects of creative writing, aspects of narration such as the choice of dialogue diction and location, the need for convincing and consistent characters and the question of lin- guistic inheritance. There will also be an activity in which excerpts of Smailes's work will be read and members of the public will be able to address the author directly. Every year the programme of the Festival includes a musical per- formance, which this year will be given by the HipHop act Marmalja, whose performance will close the first night of the Festival, that is 4th April. ACCA renews the JES agreement with the Malta ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certi- fied Accountants) and the Malta Institute of Accountants (MIA) are proud to announce the renewal of the Joint Examination Schemes (JES) and signing of a new partner- ship agreement. ACCA and MIA have JES covering both the ACCA Qualification and ACCA's Foun- dations in Accountancy suite of qualifica- tions. Through the JES, ACCA and MIA deliver globally accepted qualifications with local recognition and relevance. Students that complete the ACCA JES in Malta are able to satisfy the exam criteria for membership of both bodies simultaneously. Leo Lee, deputy president of ACCA and Franco Azzopardi, President of MIA met in Malta on the 8 March to renew the JES for a further five years until 2022, and to sign an enhanced partnership agreement between the two bodies. "Our agreement with the ACCA provides Maltese professional accountants with busi- ness-relevant, first-choice qualifications that serve as the base-line of a higher calibre for a rewarding career in accountancy, fi- nance and management," said Franco Azzo- pardi. "From being an examining body for several decades to partnering with ACCA, the objectives of the MIA remain that of at- tracting talented individuals to the profes- sion, offering them a qualification route and eventually get them on board as Members." "I am pleased to be further strengthening the relationship between ACCA and MIA with a new partnership agreement," said Leo Lee. "This partnership will enhance the reputation and influence of both ACCA and MIA in Malta, and will allow us to jointly identify opportunities to promote and de- velop the accountancy profession. I look forward to continuing to co-operate and collaborate with MIA." APS Bank joins the Loan Market Association APS Bank has become a member of the UK-based Loan Market As- sociation (LMA). The LMA was set up in 1996 and is made up of 640 members from 61 different countries, with a mix of banks, law firms, borrowers, regulators and educators which come together to promote syndi- cated loans as a key debt product and to establish sound, accept- able practices in the primary and secondary markets. "I'm confident that this member- ship will make us more pro-active to the needs of the loan market, while giving our customers peace of mind on the transpar- ency of our lending products," said Marvin Farrugia, Senior Manager Asset-Liability Manage- ment at APS Bank and the Bank's Nominated Representative for the LMA.
