21 Sport DARTS maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 3 MAY 2017 NORBERT Attard became the first ever Malta Premier League of Darts champion after edging out Albert Scerri 7-5 in the final. Earlier in the night both Attard and Scerri eased through their semi-finals with identical 5-0 score-line over John Agius and Godfrey Abela respectively. In the final, Scerri started the better of the two and managed to take a 2-0 lead which could have been further extended but a cou- ple of missed darts at the doubles cost him dearly as Attard upped his game to take the next four legs and a two-leg advantage at the break. After the break, Attard contin- ued where he left off as he won the 7th leg with Scerri finally break- ing the streak in the 8th to reduce the gap back to 2 legs but Norbert moved one leg away from victory with a win in the 9th leg. Despite having his back to the wall, Scerri did not give up as he found a burst of form which saw him taking the next two legs to re- duce the gap back to one leg and he could have taken the game into a tie-break decider but six missed darts at double 18 saw Attard tak- ing full advantage as he checked out 160 to become this season`s Premier League champion. The crowd present at Red Square in St. Venera witnessed a great fi- nal in which both players ended on a 86.00, 3 dart average with Attard also hitting 5 – 180s along the way. On behalf of the Malta darts as- sociation we would like to thank all the sponsors, helpers and play- ers which made this newly formed competition a success. 5 A Side Cup Competitions – Final Floriana ajax a 5 A-Side Cup Winners THE first team honour of the sea- son went to Floriana Ajax A after they swept past Mosta Horseshoe Bar in the 5 a-side cup final. Play- ing in front of a sizable crowd at the Zejtun Beland Club, Floriana took the lead through John Cian- tar as he edged out Tony Borg 3-2. Norbert Attard doubled their lead as he comfortably defeated Albert Scerri 3-0 and Vincent Busutill finished off the job by winning with the same score line against Godfrey Abela. With the title`s destination already decided both captains agreed that there was no need to play the 4th and 5th games. These two teams are scheduled to meet again next week as they will battle it out again in another final in the 4 a-side Cup. National League – round up National title to be decided on final day of the season Division One – Wins for Kalkara St Joseph and Floriana Ajax A in gameweek 19 meant that the Na- tional division one title will be de- cided next Friday as these teams are scheduled to play each other on the final day of the season. Kalka- ra only require a draw to retain the title as they enjoy a two-point cushion over the Greens. The last gameweek will also pair up another direct en- counter featuring two teams fighting to avoid relegation, Bormla Bocci Club and Gudja POs Bar. Only a win would see Gudja retain their sta- tus in division one. Division Two – Bugibba Mun- chies Pub join Hamrun Edu- cation Bar A in division one next season as they clinched the point they needed to seal promotion against Senglea M. Conquest. These two teams play each other next week with Ham- run only requiring a draw to be crowned Champions. In case of a Bugibba win both teams would require to play a decider. Mosta Bocci Club kept their hopes of avoiding relegation alive with a 5-3 win over Cospicua Rangers. In the final game of the season they play against already rel- egated BBugia Cox Sports Club B with Gudja POs Bar B who enjoy a two-point lead hosting Cospicua Rangers. Division Three – Hamrun Ed- ucation Bar B host Mqabba St Mary BC next week with a win confirming promotion to divi- sion two. Chasing Hamrun are Bugibba Sun City, currently trailing by one point who play already crowned champions Mosta Horseshoe Bar B.
