52 Events maltatoday, SUNDAY, 21 MAY 2017 KFC Malta in innovative collaboration with St Patrick's Salesian School KFC Malta are proud to an- nounce their commitment to join hundreds of local KFC sites around the world by participat- ing in Harvest, the world's first- ever prepared food donation program. Through Harvest, KFC Malta is donating surplus food product to St Patrick's Salesian School in Sliema, who will repurpose the donated food to create protein- and nutrient-rich meals for the boys in their care. St Patrick's Salesian School offers care and education to children and young persons who need specific sup- port usually due to their family situation. "The Harvest program is a sim- ple method for donating items we cannot sell to people in need," said Kurt Micallef, Business Manager at Food Chain Limited. "We are so proud of the way our team members have responded to this program, and we are thrilled to work with KFC stores around the world as we tackle the issues of food waste and hunger." When participating in Har- vest, restaurant team members package unsold and wholesome food into approved containers and store the product safely in the restaurant's freezer. With assistance from Food Donation Connection, each restaurant is partnered with a local charity and coordinates a weekly pick- up schedule while tracking the donations to ensure safety and quality. John Bonello Ghio, Group Head of Food Business at Far- sons Group added, "With 1 in 9 people around the world suffer- ing from hunger and as much as one-third of the world's food wasted each year, we at KFC be- lieve that simply redirecting sur- plus food to those in need will make a tremendous impact." Fr Charles Said from St Pat- rick's Salesian School says that the Harvest Programme serves many purposes. "It is about cre- ating solidarity, working as a team, creating collaboration be- tween businesses and charitable societies, avoiding waste of food, being generous, sharing our re- sources with others, being of service and ready to accompany others in their needs. All these values are part and parcel of the Harvest Programme. It is serv- ing us well and giving our chil- dren an opportunity to enjoy one of their favourite foods." The KFC brand globally has been affiliated with Harvest since 1999, helping Yum! donate more than 32 million kilograms of food to more than 3,000 non- profit organisations worldwide. KFC is committed to further expanding this program around the globe with a simple vision – a world without hunger. The Har- vest programme helps the brand get closer to that goal each and every day by supporting those in need, right around the corner from the restaurants. GO supported literacy programme reaching schools across Malta Mark Scerri wins the first edition of the Red Bull Beat It New libraries have been present- ed to the Msida Primary School as part of the Aqra Kemm Tiflah project which is being supported by the 'GO for the future' fund. Aqra Kemm Tiflah is run by the National Literacy Agency within the Ministry for Education and Employment, and aims to install new libraries in every Year 1, 2 and 3 classroom in state schools across Malta. Each library in- cludes 100 high-appeal books to encourage children to read for pleasure. The books are both fic- tion and non-fiction, 50 in Mal- tese and 50 in English. During the presentation of the new libraries by GO's Chief Com- mercial Officer, Kurt Camilleri, children from the school which forms part of the St Theresa Col- lege took part in various reading activities. At the same time, two new big books were launched by the National Literacy Agency; Is-Shaba l-Imqarba by Maria At- tard and Il-Gugarelli by Romina Zammit. These books have been published as part of the Bil-Hila Taghkom project which aims to encourage the creation of new re- sources for the reaching of Mal- tese. Mr Camilleri said, "GO for the future was launched with an ini- tial commitment of €80,000 to support education and the popu- larisation of science. In just six months we have already made two very significant investments; in Aqra Kemm Tiflah and the Malta Robotics Olympiad. It is clear that Malta's future prosper- ity will depend not only on our technology and communications infrastructure but also on our ability to make the most of the new opportunities these will pro- vide. To do this we need people who are passionate about science and technology. But above all else we need people who want to learn and for that we need to help chil- dren develop a love for reading. This is why Aqra Kemm Tiflah is such an important project." 'GO for the future', which was launched in November 2016, committed €11,000 to Aqra Kemm Tiflah during the current academic year and will commit a further €11,000 next year to en- sure the project continues. Mark Scerri has won the first ever Red Bull Beat It edition in Malta, after a thrilling final against Cher- yl Lofreda. With Pjazza Teatru Rjal as the backdrop, 16 finalists danced it out in front of a sizable crowd, who had to decide who would advance, and eventually win, the competition. Apart from displaying a variety of dance styles in this revolutionary street-style contest, dancers also had the extra challenge of interact- ing with the crowd. The Red Bull Beat It event was organised by OTH and supported by Urban Jungle – House of Sport and Bass Camp Malta.
