15 WHAT'S ON WHAT'S ON TODAY In Guardia Parade Historical re-enactment at Fort St Elmo Place, Valletta at 11:00. The re-enactment portrays the inspection of the fort and its garrison by the Grand Bailiff of the Order of the Knights of St. John in charge of military affairs. During the re-enactment, of the fort's garrison - some 50 re- enactors in all, kitted-out in their uniforms perform their military drill to demonstrate to the Grand Bailiff its state of readiness. Payment at the door. Otello - Live from The Royal Opera House A new production Verdi's tragic Otello, starring Jonas Kaufmann, streamed live at Eden Cinemas at 8.15pm. Tickets at €18 for adults and €10 for children under 16. Price includes a complimentary glass of wine and complimentary parking at the Eden Leisure Car park. Michelangelo: Love and Death An encore screening of an on-screen art exhibition, taking a journey from the print and drawing rooms of Europe, through the great chapels and museums of Florence, Rome and the Vatican to explore the life of artist Michelangelo. EXHIBITIONS UNTIL AUGUST 10 A Tranquil Star Collective exhibition of international artists at the newly-reopened Malta Contemporary Art, 12, Felix Street, Valletta. Featuring the work of Anthea Hamilton (UK), 2017 Venice Biennale artist Salvatore Arancio (Italy) as well as Basim Magdy (Egypt), Haris Epaminonda (Cyprus) and Nicholas Byrne (UK). More information: w w w. maltacontemporaryart.com. MUSIC JUNE 30 Bark Bark Disco live at Gugar The indie rock band Bark Bark Disco will be performing at Gugar Hangout and Bar, Valletta at 21:30. Entrance is free. JULY 3 Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers The Stage Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers present taiko (a form of Japanese drumming) in a modern and theatrical style with precise choreography, dramatic lighting, and a variety of costumes ranging from the post-apocalyptic industrial to gorgeous earthy silks. The concert is extremely musically varied; powerful rhythms, huge taiko drums, delicate shinobue bamboo f lute, expressive percussion, and dance pepper the show. Bookings: http:// maltaartsfestival.org/event/ mugenkyo-taiko-drummers/ JULY 4 MPO/MYO Joint Concert In what has become an annual event, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra joins forces with the Malta Youth Orchestra to present a captivating and engaging performance in the beautiful setting of Fort St Elmo in Valletta, under the direction of acclaimed conductor Peter Stark. The programme includes the theme music for The Simpsons, Star Wars, Harry Potter and The Magnificent Seven, as well as the Billy the Kid Suite and George Gershwin's Cuban Overture. In a first-time collaboration with Cuban guitarist Ahmed Dickinson Cardenas, this performance is a delightful, passionate, exciting journey from baroque music, gradually evolving into contemporary Cuban music through the music of Bach, Paganini, Bartók, De Falls, Piazzolla, and contemporary Cuban composer Eduardo Martin, with whom Dickinson often plays himself. Also featuring Ira Losco, Crux, Vinyl Paradise, Xarulu, The Crowns, Oxygyn, WaterWings, The Travellers, The Voyage and Relikc. Bookings: http:// w w w.ticketline.com.mt/ JULY 6 Big Band Brothers: Kubu Site-specific project that takes the stage off the ground and creates a performance that allows multiple viewing perspectives. This project challenges space through moving structures. With Big Band Brothers (directed by Daniel Cauchi) and the design commissioned from dandDLab architecture design laboratory, you will hear the fusion of big band with electro swing through Malta's characterful sounds. KUBU is a collaboration project between Daniel Cauchi and dandDlab design laboratory, and performed by the Big Band Brothers. Bookings: http:// maltaartsfestival.org/event/ kubu/ UNTIL JULY 10 Victoria International Arts Festival For the 20th edition of the Victoria International Arts Festival, a series of 37 concerts, together with exhibitions, master classes, and specialised talks will be presented in Victoria, Gozo. This is a five-week period of uninterrupted musical and cultural activity that is attracting tourists and music-lovers who visit Gozo specifically for the Festival. As for the past nine years, the opening and closing concerts of the Festival will see the participation of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Prof. Joseph Vella, Artistic Director of the Festival.
