22 maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 12 JULY 2017 Sport MOTORSPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIO MICALLEF David Dimech ASMK end of season on Saturday THE Assocjazzjoni Sport Muturi u Karozzi will be closing the ASMK Pasta Poiatti 2016/2017 National Championships for this season this coming Saturday. On this day there will be the last event of each of two ASMK sections. The Trials will be competing at the Tal-Maghlaw quarry, limits of Sig- giewi, while the Autocross races will be held at the association sports com- plex at Ta' Qali. The Autocross races will start their 12th and last event at 8:00pm. ASMK organized the 11th event last Saturday. 22 drivers were registered for this event, divided into two main classes, that for Standard cars and another for Modified cars. An overview of the day's event shows that no one driver won all of the three qualifying heats and Terence Azzo- pardi on his Opel Corsa managed to win the highest score of the day, en- suring his place in the Class A final for the Modified cars. Other drivers who also qualified for this final were Melo Zammit on his Opel Corsa, the Ford Fiesta of Karl Micallef, Jurgen Mallia on his Honda Civic, Philip Joe Vella on his Opel Corsa and the Peugeot 106 of Jean Paul Grech. Right from the start of this final Mi- callef was seen together with Grech making a good launch but Micallef took the lead while by Grech and Azzopardi right after the first corner. After two laps an accident occurred between Azzopardi and Grech which resulted in Vella overturning his car while following Azzopardi. Due to this the referee stopped the race. The re-start was set but with- out Vella. After the nine laps of this final race the result shows Micallef registering another win, followed by Grech and Zammit. Fourth place was won by Azzopardi while Mallia was forced to retire before the re-start because of a technical fault to his en- gine. For the final of the Modified Class B we saw the Start Line composed by Brandon Lee Vassallo on his Peugeot 205, Gordon Johnson on his Opel Corsa, the Fiat Punto of Noel Zam- mit, Guzi Pace on his Ford Escort, Jonathan Vella on his Ford Fiesta and the Vauxhall Nova of Andrew Pisani. With the departure of this final Pisani and Zammit raced to the lead but it was Pisani taking the first position and followed by Zam- mit and Pace. There was no overtak- ing throughout this race final except that Johnson was forced to retire on his first lap. This resulted in Pisani winning this final followed by Zam- mit and Pace. Fourth place was won by Vassallo. Vella won fifth place. From the Autocross Standard Class Final the start line was composed by Kyle Agius on a Renault 5 Campus, Jerome Peplow on his Kia Avella, Ni- covich Chircop and Quinn Camilleri both on a Peugeot 106, the Opel Nova of Josef Abela and Farrugia Deane on his Citroen AX. At the start of this final Abela, Camilleri and Farrugia raced head to head to reach the first corner but it was Abela taking the helm of this final after the first corner. Abela was followed by Camilleri and Farrugia while sixth placed Chircop started advancing so that up to the end of the 2nd lap Chircop was following close to Farrugia. During the 4th lap Chircop was making lots of extra pressure on Far- rugia and a contact happened be- tween the two. This contact resulted in stopping Farrugia and Chircop was suspended by the referee of the day. In the meantime Camilleri also withdrew from the race on the same lap due to a mechanical failure and consequently this resulted in just two cars were left running to the end of this final. Abela won this race final followed by Peplow in second place while Camilleri was placed in third place. Due to two objections resulting from accidents taking place in the Final A Modified Class and in the Standard Class Final the association withheld the overall results and stat- ed that there can be a change in the final outcome of these races. These issues will be discussed by the execu- tive committee and will decide on the two issues today.
