Along with President of the Malta Weightlifting Association, Jesmond Caruana, athletes Yazmin Zammit Stevens, Eli- sia Scicluna and Shelby Man- gion Vassallo are all currently preparing for international competitions in the near fu- ture, with the World Univer- sity Games coming up first this August. Zammit Stevens will be representing the University of Malta on the World Stage in Taipei at what will be her biggest competition yet. She is set to compete in the 63kg category on the 22nd of Au- gust against some of the World's top athletes. Despite it being a very tough compe- tition, she is aiming for big results in hopes of qualify- ing for next years Common- wealth Games in Australia. The training camp in Slove- nia was especially planned prior to the World University Games to ensure Yazmin is in top shape for the competi- tion. The training camp will be a first for the youngest of the three athletes, 14 year old Shelby Mangion Vassallo, who will be preparing for the European Youth Champion- ships that are to be held in Kosovo. The championships are of special importance as it is a qualification event for the Youth Olympic Games. Elisia Scicluna, who has recently come back to com- petition after a minor opera- tion in her knee, will also be benefitting from the training camp as part of her prepara- tion towards the Mediterra- nean Cup to be held in Slove- nia later on this year. Despite being fresh out of her recov- ering phase from injury, Sci- cluna has shown great deter- mination and consistency in her lifts, lifting a solid total in her last national competition. The athletes will be accom- panied by the President of the Association and Malta's na- tional team coach, Jesmond Caruana, who will be attend- ing a coaching weightlifting seminar prior to the training camp. This incredible step for- ward in athlete preparation for international meets would not have been possible with- out the continuous help from the Malta Weightlifting As- sociation, the Malta Olympic Committee and SportMalta.
