8 Malta has highest penalty for drugs, money laundering MALTA has the EU's highest form of punishment on drugs and mon- ey laundering, new research from transaction screening platform Fortytwo Data has revealed. The data called into question Belgium's anti-money laundering (AML) measures, revealing it was the most lenient European Union state towards those found guilty of the crime. Money laundering – the process by which criminals disguise the original ownership and control of the proceeds of criminal conduct – is often used to fund terrorist organisations. Belgium gives money launderers a maximum sentence of just five years, according to Fortytwo's re- search, while Bulgaria – the strict- est country – has a maximum sen- tence of 30 years. Malta can sentence offenders to life imprisonment if the money laundering is linked to a drugs of- fence, while the UK comes in joint fourth position along with Cyprus and Ireland, levying a maximum 14-year sentence. "Terrorists cannot operate with- out funds and that money must often be moved across interna- tional borders. This is why tack- ling money laundering is crucial in the fight against terrorism, but the EU and its allies must speak with one voice," said Julian Dixon, chief executive of Fortytwo Data. Denmark, Finland and Sweden closely followed Belgium with maximum sentences of six years. Greece, Luxembourg and Slovakia were harsh on the sentencing, all threatening a maximum sentence of 20 years. maltatoday, SUNDAY, 27 AUGUST 2017 News Car smashes into Gzira traffic lights, three hospitalised Environment & Resources Authority Hexagon House, Spencer Hill, Marsa.
