HUNDREDS of telephone calls, and CCTV footage from dozens of cameras in the vicinity of the Mosta and Bidnija have been examined by police investigators poring over clues in the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. But it appears that the tracking of emails and messaging by the FBI, which is assisting the Maltese police, has bolstered their resolve in the ongoing investigations on the car bomb assassination of 16 October. Now running into the third week of inves- tigations, the Maltese investigators sounded a more optimistic note on the pace of inves- tigations. A senior police source refused to divulge details, simply saying that police had covered more ground than they previously expected to. "It's a major operation with all hands on deck. I can assure you everyone has the same objective – to iden- tify the killers." SAVIOUR BALZAN NATIONALIST Party leader Adrian Delia has been asked to convene an urgent parliament meeting on Monday, by rebel MPs who told this newspaper they are unhappy with his 'business as usual' approach to politics. The meeting, scheduled for Monday evening, has been met by a lack of enthusiasm by Delia. A close aide said that while Delia is concerned about what MPs' is- sues with him, "he is far equally concerned about what the man in the street is thinking," referring to the fact that Delia was elected by PN paid-up members. Delia today addresses the PN General Council, which wel- comes a new president and ex- ecutive. Last Monday, an effort was underway for a block vote organised by Delia's backers to bolster the new leader's sup- porters inside the 18-person executive. The list included MP Kristy Debono, who contested the post of general council presi- dent in a face-off with former MP Censu Galea. The other names included Delia's chief of staff Pierre Portelli, the for- mer director of content at The Malta Independent, and failed leadership candidate Alex Per- ici Calascione. It also includes three Net TV personalities, jour- nalists Mario Frendo, Robert Cremona and presenter Jerome Caruana Cilia. Former MP Jean Pierre Debono, who gave up his parliamentary seat so that Delia could take up his place in parliament, is also on the list. Other names included Perici Calascione's daughter Veronica, Net TV personalities Louise Te- desco, Claire Mifsud and Lisa Spiteri. The sister of failed lead- ership candidate Frank Portelli, Evelyn Vella Brincat, also fea- tures on the list. The candidates for the PN executive surprisingly include no Gozitans, allies of leadership rival Chris Said. YANNICK PACE A fishing operator reported to the police by a judge on fuel smuggling accusations, is claiming the au- thorities are making "an example" of him. The decision was handed down by Judge Silvio Meli on Tuesday after fishing operator Paul Piscopo lost a request for the release of his boat – the Dimitra – which had been seized by customs in 2013 after be- ing found with some 8,000 litres of undeclared diesel, from a total load of some 40,000 litres, on board by the Maltese armed forces. Speaking to MaltaToday, Piscopo, who is also the secretary-general of fishing co-op Ghaqda Koperattiva Sajd, insisted there was no basis for the decision.
