The arrests came days after a delegation from the European Parliament left Malta follow- ing a two-day fact-finding mission on the rule of law in Malta. Below is a timeline of events starting from Caruana Gali- zia's murder until the arrests made on Monday. Daphne Caruana Galizia is murdered October 16, just before 3pm — Journalist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia is murdered in a powerful car bomb in Bidnija, a short dis- tance from her home. October 16, 4:30pm — Prime Minister Joseph Mus- cat addresses a press confer- ence in front of Castille, calls it a "black day for freedom of expression". October 16, 7pm — Caruana Galizia's family requests ab- stention of magistrate Con- suelo Scerri Herrera from the murder inquiry. Scerri Her- rera, who was duty magistrate when the murder happened, acceded the request and stepped down the following day, to be replaced by magis- trate Anthony Vella. October 16 — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange offers €20,000 for information lead- ing to the conviction of Caru- ana Galizia's killers. Dutch police, FBI arrive in Malta as journalists gather in solidarity October 17 — Dutch police team arrive in Malta to aid with the investigation. October 17 ¬— Opposition leader Adrian Delia calls for Prime Minister to take politi- cal responsibility for the mur- der and resign. October 18 — FBI land in Malta to assist in investiga- tion. October 18 — PANA Com- mittee demands an interna- tional investigation into the murder. October 19 — journalists from Malta's media houses gather in Valletta in a show of solidarity following the mur- der, a number of foreign news media are also present. First police press conference held, Pope offers condolences and Government issues €1m reward October 19 — Police Com- missioner Lawrence Cutajar and deputy commissioner Silvio Valletta address first press conference to local and foreign journalists, three days after the murder. It is widely viewed as having been a PR disaster. October 20 — Pope Francis extends his condolences to the Caruana Galizia family, says he is 'saddened' by jour- nalist's death. October 21 — Government of Malta offers a €1 million reward for information on Caruana Galizia's murderers. First demonstration by CSN held in Valletta, minute silence held in EP October 22 — Thousands gather at Valletta demonstra- tion in honour of the slain journalist, as Civil Society Network calls for the removal of the Police Commissioner and Attorney General. Mal- tese community in London also gathers outside High Commission. October 23 — Commotion in the Maltese parliament as Opposition calls for suspen- sion of normal business to urgently focus on civil society resignation calls. October 24 — minute si- lence held in European Parlia- ment as MEPs pay tribute to Caruana Galizia, EP President Antonio Tajani calls for EU- ROPOL to be fully involved in investigation. October 26 — Occupy Jus- tice, a group of female activ- ists, camp outside Castille de- manding resignation of Police Commissioner and Attorney General. EUROPOL arrive, President meets Occupy Justice activists, second demonstration held October 26 — EUROPOL officials arrive to assist Malta police. October 28 — President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca meets Occupy Justice repre- sentatives for talks. October 29 — Second dem- onstration, in Sliema, is held. November 3 — Daphne Caruana Galizia is laid to rest, as country observes a national day of mourning. Third demonstration held as MEPs pass resolution on rule of law in Malta November 3 — European Commission calls on Malta to find journalist's killers. November 5 — Third dem- onstration held outside police headquarters in Floriana. November 14 — MEPs in European Parliament debate resolution on rule of law in Malta, which passes with 466 votes in favour, 49 against, 160 abstentions. November 20 — Home af- fairs minister Michael Far- rugia confirms in parliament that Dutch police, FBI and EUROPOL, together with a British investigator and other unnamed foreign experts are assisting in the investigation. Gives no information with re- gard to progress in investiga- tions. Caruana Galizia family ask for removal of deputy commissioner November 22 — Caruana Galizia family ask constitu- tional court to remove deputy commissioner Silvio Valletta from investigation, claim con- flict of interest due to his mar- riage to government minister Justyne Caruana. November 29 — Caruana Galizia family say they are prepared to use all legal means to prevent government from 'sabotaging' investigation. MEP delegation on fact-finding mission in Malta November 30-December 1 — An MEP delegation arrives in Malta for a two-day fact- finding mission on rule of law in Malta. December 3 — Fourth dem- onstration organised by the CSN and addressed by Ital- ian anti-corruption prosecu- tor Antonio Di Pietro, held in Valletta. 10 people arrested December 4 — Eight indi- viduals arrested in connec- tion with Caruana Galizia murder, during the early hours at Menqa area, Marsa, in an operation involving the police and AFM. Soon after the Prime Minister addresses a press conference in front of Castille. December 4 11am — Gov- ernment announces arrest of an additional two individuals, total now ten. The criminals were caught completely unaware as heavily armed police and sol- diers raided the buildings from and sea. Although access to the potato shed was open yesterday morn- ing, police officers were still around. In the afternoon, journalists were pushed away as a van with armed police officers and the army's bomb disposal appeared on site to resume searches in other warehouses. Whether the police activity over the past few days is enough to smoke out the illegal activity that takes place in the Menqa area still has to be seen. But the people who spoke to this newspaper are not too sure this will be the case unless the police presence continues to be felt every day. ksansone@mediatoday.com.mt of criminals Police Commissioner Lawrence Cutajar The remains of Daphne Caruana Galizia's Peugeot 108 in the immediate aftermath of the bombing The homicide inspector ex- plained that he had arrested the men by telling them, "You are under arrest for the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia". George Degiorgio, 54, unem- ployed from Marsa, Alfred De- giorgio, from Marsa, residing at St Paul's Bay, and Vincent Mus- cat from Gzira all pleaded not guilty. Bail was not requested for any of the accused. The prosecution asked the court to impose a freezing order over the assets of the accused, which the court upheld in view of the defence's non-contesta- tion. The men, dressed in jeans and duffel jackets remained calm and unfazed throughout the proceedings.
