Organised by UNHCR Malta as part of the #IBelong campaign to end statelessness, with a selection of photos taken in Myanmar, Italy and Malta. FEBRUARY 2-MARCH 1 Embedded Exhibition of paintings by Wioletta Kulewska at Palazzo de La Salle, Republic Street, Valletta. A collection of abstract, biomorphic paintings by Wioletta Kulewska, inspired by the marine fossil remains found inside Maltese limestone. Opening hours: 08:30-19:00 (Monday to Friday); 08:30-13:30 (Saturdays). UNTIL FEBRUARY 11 White Memory – 1989/2018 Art in Malta and Poland Exhibition curated by Irene Biolchini and Marinella Paderni at Spazju Kreattiv at St James Cavalier, Valletta. The exhibition revolves around the ties between Malta and Poland and the search for identity in the present – which also represents the promise for the future. White is the colour of pureness, but it is also the colour used to cancel, to erase, thus presenting the leitmotiv of this exhibition. Featured artists include: Victor Agius, Paweł Althamer, Norbert Francis Attard, Ewa Axelrad, Miroslaw Balka, Vince Briffa, Austin Camilleri, Gabriel Caruana, Alicja Dobrucka, Nicolas Grospierre, Magda Skupinska, Mark Mangion, Agnieska Polska, Pierre Portelli, Jósef Robakowski, Raphael Vella, Jakub Woynarowski. This project is supported by the Malta Arts Council and the Polish Institute in Rome and endorsed by the Valletta 2018 Foundation. UNTIL FEBRUARY 28 Mandala Art exhibition at the Art Box Gallery of Modern Art in Qala, Gozo. The permanent artists of this art gallery will be welcoming guest artist Inddia Uruku with her colourful Mandalas. FEBRUARY 9-14 Carnival in Malta and Gozo The Maltese carnival is one of Malta's oldest festivities, harking back to the rule of the Knights of the Order of Saint John. Today, this colourful event is celebrated across the Maltese Islands, with the boldest and brightest activities centred in the capital city of Valletta. For four days, the city's historic streets come to life with marching bands, fancy dress competitions and dancers in elaborate costume. But the highlight of this age- old celebration is certainly the carnival float parade that features all manners of impressive handmade floats – some allegorical, some satirical and others just plain fun, fantastical and whacky. FEBRUARY 9-14 Malta International Violin Making Competition Central Academy of Arts in collaboration with Violin Limited Company will be organising the Malta International Violin Making Competition featuring professional and amateur violin makers from around the world. The event will be held in Mdina and St Julian's. MARCH 2 Bark Bark Disco The indie rock band Bark Bark Disco will be performing at Offbeat, 106, Merchants Street, Valletta at 22:00. THEATRE FEBRUARY 2-4 My Fair Lady – The Musical Musical production based on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion and produced by FM Theatre Productions. Taking place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta at 20:00 on February 2 and 3, and 15:30 and 19:00 on February 4. Directed by Denise Mulholland, with Kris Spiteri as musical director and choreography by Emma Loftus. Bookings: mcc.com.mt. FEBRUARY 2-4 Antigone A Teatru Manoel production of Jean Anouilh's Antigone, which transposes the action of Sophocles' Greek tragedy of the same name to World War II. Directed by Tyrone Grima and featuring Sharon Bezzina in the title role. Shows start at 20:00. Bookings: http://www. teatrumanoel.com.mt/default. asp?m=shows&id=709 FEBRUARY 10-12 Il-Qarcilla: L-Gharusa Karfusa This year's edition of the traditional carnival farce is written by Leanne Ellul and will be staged at various village squares in Malta and Gozo. L-Għarusa Karfusa is your classic tale of forbidden love between a fruit and a vegetable. In this absurd satirical universe where the villagers are named after vegetables, the inhabitants of 'Ħal-Insalata' are forbidden to talk to ones left in the forbidden quarantine; let alone fall in love! When Karfusa from the vegetable hamlet lays her pretty eyes on Bajtru in the scheduled quarantine, all hell breaks loose. The show will be staged at the following venues and times: Valletta: February 10 (17:00, 18:00, 19:00), Ħamrun: February 11 (09.30), Victoria: February 11 (15.30 and 18.00), Nadur: February 11 (20:30) and Għaxaq: February 12 (19.30). The show is directed by Jacob Piccinino and co-produced by Festivals Malta, Karnival ta' Malta, Gozo Carnival, and the Department of Maltese at the University of Malta. FEBRUARY 24, 25 Años Luz Shadow puppetry performance by Spanish theatre company Luz Micro y Punto at the Mqabba Primary School Hall, Mqabba at 18:00 (February 24) and 16:00 (February 25). The story centres around a composer caught in the process of musing over her next score, which she serendipitously uncovers through a playful creative process. FEBRUARY 9 Art in the arena of activism: the Art+Feminism Edit-a-thon Public talk by curator, art critic, and Paris Art+Feminism organiser Flora Katz at Blitz, St Lucy Street, Valletta at 19:00. For this talk, Flora Katz will present the 2017 Paris edition and discuss some of the issues at the core of the project, such as how art and wikipedia can be a driving force to gather a community and act upon feminist issues, and what is at stake in the elaboration of an activist and co-creative project within artistic institutions. FILM SCREENINGS TONIGHT Dragon Blade Screening of the Jackie Chan- starring historical action film at Spazju Kreattiv cinema at St James Cavalier, Valletta at 19:30. Dragon Blade is a 2015 Chinese-Hong Kong historical action film written and directed by Daniel Lee and starring Jackie Chan. In the film, Chan plays Huo An, the commander of The Silk Road Protection Squad during the Han Dynasty, who is committed towards stopping battles and promoting the idea of peace. The screening is being organised by the China Cultural Centre, and forms part of the Happy Chinese New Year in Valletta 2018 series. Bookings: http://www. kreattivita.org/en/event/ dragon-blade-2015/. FEBRUARY 17 Icon Island Valletta 2018 project by Virgil Widrich at the Salesians' Theatre, Sliema at 20:30. The Austrian filmmaker and director known for his experimental films and multimedia works will be presenting a collage of visuals inspired by films dealing with the mystic and romantic journey to islands representing alternative societies or different states of mind.
