maltatoday WEDNESDAY 2 MAY 2018 News 3 TIA RELJIC LABOUR supporters at the Work- ers' Day mass meeting event seemed equally enthusiastic about celebrating May Day and showing support for their leader, and unfazed in various degrees at the recent allegations brought for- ward against the government through the Daphne Project. Speaking to MaltaToday, a woman said that she attended the meeting to "listen to the Prime Minister and our leader." "I am more bothered by the accusa- tions against Delia than those against Muscat," she said when asked how she felt about the allegations. The majority of supporters spoke in unison and knew exactly what brought them to the Triton fountain on May Day: celebrating May 1, support- ing the Prime Minister, and wishing all workers a good holiday. "I have done well under [ M u s c a t ] , " one pensioner said. "He in- creased my pension. I had a yearly €400 tax and he removed it," she said, add- ing that if her children get fed up of be- ing in one place, they can al- ways find an- other one – p r e s u m a b l y referring to employment. O d d l y , when asked whether she was wor- ried about the accusa- tions of cor- ruption put forward against the government, she said that the Prime Minister had already resigned – but the people wanted him again. "They have no reason to keep doing this." A group of young people were simi- larly convinced that the allegations were nothing to worry about. "The only thing we see is wealth," a woman said, adding that there is employment in the country and that everyone is happy. "This is what we care about most," she said, to which her friend interjected to say that "everything is going well." "What is important is that the accusations are accusations. They didn't find anything," she said, adding that Joseph Muscat, Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi always "won the accusations." "My family and I are living well – that's what's important." When asked what brought h i m t o V a l - letta, one man said that he came to s u p p o r t his "great leader". But he said that he is wor- ried about the accusa- tions being made against the government, since they are tarnishing the image of the country and to Muscat personally. "We have such a good Prime Minister," the woman next to him injected. "I am here because I have been a La- bourite all my life," another elder- ly man said, adding that Dom Mintoff had done away with poverty and that Muscat, who is "Godsend to the country", has kept Malta "rich". "I am a pensioner, and we have absolutely nothing to complain about under [Mus- cat]" he said, explaining that the Nationalist Party never cared about workers – where- as the Labour Party always "loved" them. "Under Mintoff we were good, and under Sant as well – but Muscat was sent by God." Accusations against the government are strengthening it, he said, because Muscat is "so genuine". Another man – who said that he has been attending May Day mass meetings while still in the womb – finds it unacceptable that one would not show support for Muscat. "He is our courage," he said. But he admitted that he was worried about the Daphne Project allegations in the beginning – but quickly clari- fied that he is sure that Muscat is in- nocent. The same sentiment was echoed by yet another supporter who said that he is used to the accusations. "They never have proof," he said. "The people are used to this now, I think." 'Everyone' is happy under Labour "Under Mintoff we were good, and under Sant as well – but Muscat was sent by God"
