14 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 14 NOVEMBER 2018 CULTURE WRITER Randolph Bourne maintains that 'few people ever scratch the surface, much less exhaust the contempla- tion of their own experiences'. Gharghur's Dwal Godda thea- tre group's forthcoming pro- duction 'Kulhadd Ihokk Fejn Jieklu' entices the audience to explore circumstances of itch- ing and scratching caused as one is belittled and ridiculed and, possibly, also whether the one who causes it should be considered a case of ridicule him/herself. The play revolves around a group of tertiary students researching how they could help those who feel ridiculed by discovering ways how to stand on their own two feet. After all, as a Chinese prov- erb proclaims, 'when the itch is inside the boot, scratching outside provides little conso- lation'. 'Kulhadd Ihokk Fejn Jieklu' (a two-act play, text and di- rection: Martin Gauci) will be premiered by DWAL GODDA at Spazju Teatrali in Gharghur, on Friday 23rd November at 8pm with repeat performances the following Saturday 24th at 8pm and Sunday 25th at 6.30pm. There is no curtain-up or curtain-down. Therefore, DWAL GODDA guarantees that the itching and scratch- ing can possibly continue over a glass of wine and some nib- bles, which, if the audience so wishes, could start before the play commences. Tackling bullying and mental health GRANDMA Got S.T.E.A.M. was launched on Friday 9th November in the presence of Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta and will be open for the public till 9th December at Spot A, Spazju Kreattiv. The exhibition concludes an inter- generational project that took place over a series of storytelling workshops in the past months. A group of youths from Youth.Inc – Aġenzija Żgħażagħ worked closely with five successful women hailing from different indus- tries pertaining to Science, Technol- ogy, Engineering, Arts and Mathemat- ics (S.T.E.A.M.). Through the project, the participants shared their work and life experiences whilst discussing any obstacles or op- portunities that they encountered. The result was a rich array of memories, emotions, hopes and dreams that are captured in the illustrated storytelling pack of cards. Rachael Blackburn, Esplora Director mentioned that "it was an honour to work with this group of youth and see them develop in the process through their interaction with the team and grandmas. A perfect example of bring- ing Science, Art and the community together through intergenerational learning." Spazju Kreattiv Artistic Di- rector Toni Sant said that "It is through collaborations with diverse organisa- tions that creativity of expression can be allowed to thrive and develop across generations and disciplines". The project progressed in three phas- es; the first consisted of the storytelling workshops between the youths and the five grandmothers. The second phase saw the development of the storytell- ing and design processes leading to the production of the illustrated sto- rytelling card pack. Finally, the third phase comprised the Train the Trainer Sessions. This project was curated by Spazju Kreattiv and Esplora. The par- ticipants collaborated with Dr Giuliana Fenech who facilitated the storytelling element, illustrator Julian Mallia (also known as Julinu) and photographer Dragna Rankovic to develop the illus- trated storytelling cards. Grandma Got S.T.E.A.M. was fi- nanced by il-Premju tal-President għall-Kreattività - an arts fund that strongly supports social and commu- nity creative projects. Grandma Got S.T.E.A.M.
