15 TRAVEL maltatoday | SUNDAY • 18 NOVEMBER 2018 SPAIN is a great destination to visit at all times of the year! Even though the great beaches nearby Costa del Sol are what have made Malaga one of the most vis- ited regions of Spain, this town has much more to offer than just seaside and sun- shine! Malaga, the heart of Costa Del Sol, is a buzzing city with more history, cul- ture and great food than many cities put together. With the warmest winter in Eu- rope, Malaga makes for a great destina- tion all year round. Here are some places you simply cannot miss. The Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro The Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro Cas- tle overlook the busy port city of Málaga. They both date from the eleventh cen- tury and are linked by a stunning battle- ment walk. The Alcazaba protected the city from pirates and on a clear day, it is still possible to see all the way to Africa from its commanding position, Mount Gibralfaro. It's a long, hot trek up the mountain to reach the Gibralfaro Castle, but it is well worth it for the view. The castle was enlarged in the 14th century to protect the Alcazaba. From the castle ramparts, you can see all of Malaga and the Andalusian coast spread out before you. Centre Pompidou Málaga Opened in 2015 in the port, this centre is housed in a low-slung modern building crowned by a playful multi-coloured cube. Showing a selection of 90 works from the collection of the Centre Georges Pom- pidou in Paris, it takes visitors on a trip through 20th and 21st century art. Five themes are covered in the tour: metamor- phosis, the body in pieces, the political body, self- portraits and the man without a face. Artists include Kader Attia, Frida Kahlo, Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso and Antoni Tàpies amongst others. There are also audio-visual installations, talking 'heads' and temporary exhibitions. Museo Picasso The people of Malaga are proud of the fact that Picasso was born there and it was a big day when the King and Queen of Spain inaugurated the Museo Picasso in 2003, after more than 50 years of plan- ning. This museum provides a solid over- view of the great master and his work. Christine and Bernard Picasso, daughter- in-law and grandson of the artist, made the fruition of the museum possible by providing the core of the collection. The collection features 233 works that cover 80 years of the painter's work, from 1892 to 1972. In its 11 rooms, you can see how Picasso breaks with convention and breaks new creative ground. Highlights include a painting of Picasso's sister Lola undertaken when the artist was only 13, sculptures made from clay, plaster and sheet metal, as well as numerous sketch- es. Automobile and Fashion Museum A place where engineering, art, and fashion shine. This modern museum is home to almost 100 restored cars and 200 couture fashion pieces, all owned by one Portuguese collector. Here you can take a look at some of the most gorgeous vintage and classic cars from the line of history and get to know the trends that were presented over time. Displays include an Elizabeth Taylor jewelled car, a Star Wars automobile and some alternative energy concepts. The museum also displays haut cou- ture and other designer clothes from some of the world's most well-known designers.
