MASSIMO COSTA A specially-appointed committee has been charged with reviewing work undertaken by the fisheries depart- ment and with recommending new regulations and controls, in light of allegations of bribery against its for- mer director, parliamentary secre- tary Clint Camilleri said yesterday. Camilleri said the committee would be taking into consideration reports on the tuna industry issued by the National Statistics Office, the European Commissioner and the Internal Audit and Investigations Department (IAID), and would be issuing suggestions of what could be improved in the sector. Last February, Andreina Fenech Farrugia was suspended by Environ- ment Minister Jose Herrera after leaked phone intercepts by Spanish investigative authorities allegedly showed how she had asked a major Spanish tuna operator - José Fuentes García - for payment to allow him to introduce more bluefin tuna in the market than was allowed. Asked whether any changes had been made in relation to enforce- ment of regulations and the general administration of the local tuna sec- tor, Camilleri said the government would be looking to implement any recommendations made by the committee. Grech was speak- ing at a public hear- ing on Caruana Gali- zia's murder, together with Justice Minister Owen Bonnici and Martin Kuijer from the council's Venice Commission, where he addressed calls for an inquiry, as well as oth- er points related to the murder investigation. The Attorney Gen- eral explained that he had been in contact with lawyers repre- senting the family and had been informed that the family would be bringing a case claiming a breach of their human rights.
