30 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 18 AUGUST 2019 SPORTS RUNNING Lopez de Haro, Abdilla seal successful run at Eurosport BSJ 5k Road Running Series THE third and final race of the Eurosport BSJ 5k Road Running Series took place on Tuesday in Mtarfa. The Series was organised by Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club and was held under the auspices of the Malta Amateur Athletics As- sociation. Despite being held in sum- mer and characterised by hot and humid conditions, the three-race Series maintained its popularity. The last race of the Series saw the overall winners being crowned, this ranking being a result of the timings achieved in all three races. In the Males' Category, once again Pedro Lopez de Haro showed his mettle, giving sec- ond placed Simon Spiteri a run for his money. The duo fought hard, keep- ing each other on their toes as they progressed throughout the Series, each vying a top place on the podium. In third place was Shaun Galea. Mean- while on the overall Series po- dium, third place was taken up by Mark Herrera. In the Females' Category, Tara Abdilla sealed another victory, overcoming competi- tion from Joelle Cortis, who made a welcome return to the fold and Margaret Seguna. In the meantime, the overall Series podium was taken up by Abdilla, Seguna and Celine Pace. "Despite the hot conditions that hit the islands in the week of the race, participation was still excellent with the athletes showing their true mettle in the prevalent conditions. The Club does its utmost to provide a positive racing experience to all athletes, keeping in mind the conditions set out by the au- thorities who provide the Club with the necessary support and permits. We thank all those in- volved for their collaboration, in particular Eurosport Malta for their ongoing support." commented Euchar Camilleri, Secretary General, Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club. Medals and trophies were presented to the winners of the race by Birkirkara St. Jo- seph Sports Club President Raymond Grech, whilst those for the winners of the overall Series were presented by Ed- win Attard, President of the Malta Amateur Athletics As- sociation. The Club's next athletics related event will be the Eu- rosport Malta International Challenge Marathon to be held between the 22nd and 24th November.
