maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 30 OCTOBER 2019 12 CULTURE THE month of November al- ways starts off on a thrilling note since it reminds us of the dead. Although loved and re- spected, the dead are expect- ed to rest in peace, allowing the living to go on with their lives. Cemeteries are thought to be cities of the dead and yet they actually serve to appease the living. On Friday evening, while the night is silent and the moon howls, Heritage Malta is inviting the public on a strange journey of remem- brance rituals, intriguing revelations about the Addo- lorata Cemetery and a sleep over at the Inquisitor's Pal- ace in Birgu. The event will commence with an introduction to the popular traditions and be- liefs in souls and the afterlife, through the celebration of l-Għid tal-Erwieħ, which will be held in Maltese. This will be followed by a traditional supper which is inspired by the meals that were offered by various com- munities in memory of the deceased. During the meal, Ġużi Gatt will highlight the significance in the selection of that par- ticular food. This year, emphasis will be drawn on the 150th anniver- sary from the official opening of the Addolorata Cemetery in Paola. Eman Bonnici, author of the latest Heritage Malta's publi- cation Iċ-Ċimiterju ta' Santa Marija Addolorata: Storja, Arti, Personalitajiet will be offering curious insights into this cemetery's history. At the end of the event, participants may venture to sleep over at the Inquisitor's Palace choosing to spend the night in one of its 17th cen- tury prison cells or elsewhere within the palace. Anyway, each corner of this old build- ing has its own particular al- lure, especially at night. Prices are set at €30 for adults, or €28 for Heritage Malta members. Bookings are on first-come, first-served basis. Tickets are available from Heritage Malta muse- ums and sites and online. The event starts at 7.30pm.
