13 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 30 OCTOBER 2019 CULTURE COMIC CON BANK of Valletta is supporting the restora- tion of a late 1800s Gilt Monstrance Throne (Gelandra) found at the St Dominic Church of the Annunciation in Birgu. The Gelandra is used such as the consecrated Eucharistic host during Eucharistic adoration or Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The work of Guzeppi Decelis, the Gelandra is of remarkable design and manufacture in the ne- oclassical style and of a notable large size. The gilding is an amalgamation of silver and gold, however most of the gilding has lost its lustre. Charles Azzopardi, Executive PR and Mar- keting at Bank of Valletta met with Prior Fr Aaron Zahra OP, and Emanuel Dougall from the St Dominic Church at the studios of Re- Coop – The Restoration and Conservation Coop Ltd who have been entrusted with the restoration works. 'The Gelandra, possibly the largest one on the Maltese islands was in a dire need of res- toration with various dislodged and damaged pieces,' said Chief Restorer Paul Muscat. 'Over the years, the gilt layer was highly abraded with various areas getting detached and lost its lustre with various detachments as well as a substantial amount of wax deposits.' 'Losses will be integrated with gesso, while re-gilding with gold or silver leaf will match the original technique and finish', continued Mr Muscat. 'All interventions will be done us- ing reversible materials and techniques to en- sure no interference with the original.' 'The Gelandra is indeed a fine example of workmanship and we are looking forward to see it displayed at the Church in all its former glory,' said Mr Azzopardi. 'This is yet another project supported by Bank of Valletta that en- sures that a part of our rich cultural heritage will continue to be enjoyed by future genera- tions.' The project is co-financed by Bank of Val- letta and the National Lotteries Good Causes Fund. BOV supports restoration of late 1800's gelandra The Gelandra prior to restoration
