17 COMMERCIAL maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 30 OCTOBER 2019 EVERY year, October and the colour pink are synonymous with spreading the word on breast cancer aware- ness. Since most people know that it is the second most common form of cancer for women, the aim of aware- ness is not solely to get the word out, but to also raise awareness about early detection. And while pink might not always be a first-choice colour in the car community, automotive importer, GasanZammit Motors enthusiasti- cally threw its weight behind this global initiative. In their predominantly male work- space, staff received and were urged to distribute informative book- marks, produced specifically for GZ, which encouraged everyone to think pink and remember to check them- selves regularly. The automotive importer, renown locally for importing some of the worlds foremost car brands such as Volvo, Ford, Mazda and Honda, also introduced casual Fridays to the de- light of its employees, and to make it more interesting, asked everyone to add a touch of pink to their casual clothes throughout October against a donation towards the Marigold Foundation. In a further bid to push healthy eating and raise awareness about how consuming antioxidants in organic food can help in the fight against all forms of cancer, all staff also received jars of organic and nat- ural nut butters from local producer Munch a Bunch. AS part of its strategy to educate the people on the need of both recycling and disposing of waste properly and cor- rectly, GreenPak Coop Society stressed on the national importance of working "Towards a Cleaner Malta" (Għal Malta aktar Nadifa) during its annual Premju Kunsilli Lokali. The awards ceremony was attended by the Minister for the Environment, Sustainable Development and Climate Change Jose' Herrera, local council may- ors and counsellors. GreenPak CEO Ing Mario Schembri spoke about the significant investment made by the cooperative to collect plas- tics, paper, metal and glass materials for recycling. He noted the issue of careless individu- als that still litter the streets and about the lack of enforcement which is leading to a deteriorating situation in this regard. Following the replacement of all the bring-in sites with the new iBiNs in- stalled in 42 localities, GreenPak regis- tered a sharp rise in the collection of pa- per, glass, metal and plastic for recycling. Using the iBiNs web app at ibins.green- pak.com.mt, citizens can find out the nearest available location for iBins 24/7. "While we invested heavily in advanced technology for these sophisticated iBiNs, it is ridiculous to see careless individu- als dispose of their litter haphazardly around these containers instead of inside the relevant iBiN," Schembri said. "We are prepared to invest further, this time in the installation of CCTVs in all the iBiNs sites but first we need to see regular enforcement by the authori- ties. People need to understand that the world is not ours. We are simply bor- rowing it from our children, and we have to take care of it." GreenPak believes that the idea of gov- ernment spending taxpayers' money on cleaning litter left by irresponsible indi- viduals sends the wrong message. The money should be spent on effective en- forcement of strong and crucial regula- tions on littering. The top Outstanding Locality Award was presented to Naxxar Local Council, which also won the Most Innovative Lo- cality Award. Qala Local Council received the Best Overall Performance Award, while Birkirkara Local Council received the Nirriċikla għall-Istrina Award. The Batree Award went to Iklin Lo- cal Council, while the Most Proactive Award was won by Zejtun Local Coun- cil.
