maltatoday | SUNDAY • 3 NOVEMBER 2019 7 CULTURE TODAY, Heritage Malta is inviting the public to visit St Paul's and St Augustine's Cat- acombs in Rabat during an Open Day where admission will be free of charge. St Paul's Catacombs are spread over an underground area of 7,000sq.m and include Christian, Jewish and pagan tombs. A few metres along the street are St Augustine's Catacombs, with the engraved words Ad Catacumbas surmounting their entrance door. On this day, visitors will have the opportunity to ex- plore these interesting burial sites and learn about the dif- ferent types of graves which were hewn into the rocks and about the artefacts and the fu- nerary rites of ancient Punic, Roman and Byzantine times. Visitors can also have a hands-on-experience in a pottery-washing activity, while children can participate in a treasure hunt or in an ac- tivity using clay. The programme of activities at St Paul's Catacombs is as follows: • All day long: Treasure hunt at St Paul's Cata- combs • 9am - 4pm: Cleaning of pottery with Classics & Archaeology Students Association (CASA) Zone 2 • 11am: Children's Ac- tivity with clay at the Children's Pavilion • 11.30am: Tour in Mal- tese • 1.30pm: Tour in Eng- lish • 2.30pm: Children's Ac- tivity with clay at the Children's Pavilion Admission is free of charge. The catacombs will be open from 9am to 5pm, with last admission at 4.30pm.
