maltatoday | SUNDAY • 2 FEBRUARY 2020 14 LISTINGS WHAT'S ON Theatre UNTIL 14 FEBRUARY Scheherazade Scheherazade, a solo show by well-known local artist Charlie Cauchi, will take over and trans- form Valletta Contemporary into a space where coercion and cruelty, love and violence, sex and entertainment are made pal- pable. Cauchi's work consists of a multi-disciplinary and immer- sive installation built around the concept of a London Soho night- club. The exhibition will act as a pinpoint of light into the history of this dark underbelly, a place once renowned as the scandal- ous city of vice. Scheherazade is also a major fe- male character in middle eastern literature and the narrator of the tales in 'A Thousand and One Arabian Nights', keeping the sultan alive as an act of self-pres- ervation. The shows starts at 7.30pm at Valletta Contem- porary. Other TODAY Life in the Castrum Maris Fort St Angelo as we know it today is much different from how it looked in medieval times when it was known as the Cas- trum Maris (Castle by the Sea). Historical documents shed light about some aspects of this peri- od, including details of weapons and supplies that were used in the castle. Today, Heritage Malta is host- ing a medieval re-enactment by the Historical Re-enactment Group Malta (HRGM) with the theme 'Aspects of the Castrum Maris' at Fort St Angelo in Birgu. Between 10am to 4pm, the gen- eral public is invited to attend at the fort where re-enactors will be portraying clothing and weaponry of soldiers stationed in the Castrum Maris around the year 1400. Regular admis- sion ticket prices apply. On the same occasion, at 10am, a Curator's Tour of Upper Fort St Angelo (administered by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta) will focus on the medi- eval history of the fort with a particular focus on the histori- cal fabric found within the area, which dates from the Middle Ages, including the Castellan's House, St Anne's Chapel and the Round Tower. Ticket prices for this tour: Adults - €15, Seniors and Students – €10, Children – €8. For more information, visit www.heritagemalta.org. UNTIL 4 MARCH BOV Retrospective Exhibition 2020 Bank of Valletta will be launch- ing the 27th edition of its Ret- rospective Art Exhibition cele- brating the works of Celia Borg Cardona and her bold, vigorous and expressive brushworks. The BOV Retrospective Art Exhibition will be hosted at the Gran Salon at the Auberge de Provence (National Museum of Archaeology) in Triq ir-Repub- blika, Valletta. This magnificent baroque hall, a work of art in itself, is currently being meticu- lously restored through the sup- port of Bank of Valletta. It pro- vides a wonderful backdrop for the works of Celia Borg Cardona. The exhibition will be inaugu- rated by H.E. George Vella, Pres- ident of Malta and will be open to the public as from 1 February till 4 March 2020 from 9am till 5pm every day with the last ad- mission at 4.30pm. The exhibi- tion will feature 29 works of art showcasing the use of different media and follows the evolution of Celia's work from 2002. Music 8 FEBRUARY Two Opera Tales of Otello This spring opera lovers will have the chance to discover both Gioachino Rossini's and Gi- useppe Verdi's version of Otello thanks to Teatru Manoel and Gaulitana: A Festival of Mu- sic. Although they both relate to the same protagonist, there are some important differences between the two works. Verdi's work is based on Shakespeare's Othello, whereas Rossini's op- era is based on a French adap- tation of the story Othello, ou le More de Venise by Jean-François Ducis. The opera differs from Shakespeare's version in that the story happens in Venice not in Cyprus, Iago is less diabolic and the role of Rodrigo is more elaborate. Rossini's work might be lesser-known than Verdi's opera, but it was by all means a milestone in the development of opera as musical drama. This seminar will introduce you to both operas. The artis- tic directors Kenneth Zammit Tabona and Colin Attard will touch upon the wider context of the importance of opera on the Maltese Islands. Two Opera Tales of Otello will take place from 10.30am till 1pm. This event is free, however booking is required. The event will be held at the Italian Cultur- al Institute.
