14 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 8 MARCH 2020 EYEWITNESS Farewell to Miriam Mourners packed the Carmelite Church in Valletta on Thursday as they paid their last respects to building collapse victim Miriam Pace. Pace's house in Hamrun collapsed due to works on an adjacent construction site where excavation was taking place. The funeral of the mother of two took place amidst widespread anger at the con- struction frenzy that many blame for her death. The police have arrested six people linked to the construction project as part of their investigation into the collapse and Pace's death. Miriam was married to Carmel Pace, and they had two children. Archbishop Charles Scicluna, celebrating the funeral mass, delivered a strong mes- sage, calling for justice and for people to be able to feel safe in their own homes. "We don't want vendetta, but justice," he said, calling for proper pre-excavation geological studies to be carried out. "Did Miriam need to die in order for us to realize this?" Miriam Pace's husband Carmel bore the dignified pain of his sudden loss
