maltatoday | SUNDAY • 5 JULY 2020 11 CULTURE NATURE It's summer and most birds are raising families. Birds of our latitudes have ample time and weather conditions to raise more than one brood. But birds that nest up in the arctic have very short summers and must raise their young quickly. By July many of them have in fact completed familial duties and start migrating back down across Europe to Africa. The Common Redshank (M. Pluverott) is one such bird, and throughout summer one or two turn up at our small wetlands – such sites are vital stopovers for these travellers. True to their name, redshanks have long red legs, with matching long red bill, both handy tools for patrolling the shoreline and poking the mud or sand for invertebrates. The redshank's plaintive call evokes images of big windswept estuaries – we don't have estuaries here but at least we get redshanks stopping by for a stint. Kersten Graham takes the helm on vocals, where he lashes out about heartache, friendship, and having the final laugh. 'Broz' has a double edge: for quite some time, Da- vid Cassar Torreggiani and Kersten Graham had been toying with the idea of coming up with an original song together and meanwhile, David De- pasquale delves into a different style of production to previous DiggerThings tracks. People's lives are peppered with many game-changing moments. Some reach crossroads, get lost and feel like quitting. Some get inspired to write and sing about their life, about moments that affect our lives, even in small ways. This track is precisely that, with lyrics referring to episodes which now can be laughed about. "You asked for whiskey... and I gave you cheap wine" refers to when Kersten and David were on their way to play a live a gig together, and Kersten was duly entrusted to fill in the gas tank of David's car. He did, with petrol, except it was a diesel en- gine. This track captures the rawness and volatility of life, and where music helps one take a step back and smile about small things. That is the blues, that's rock n' roll.
