ture in some fashion, the PN em- blem has been absent, Facebook critics said. "A disillusionary (sic) logo that undoes all the good the PN did and stood for under each past leader," one such Facebook com- menter said of Paġna Gdida logo. "Is Bernard Grech ashamed to say he is Nationalist or to show the emblem?" asked another. "Utterly shameful," wrote yet an- other PN supporter. "An official activity where the leader is pres- ent, and the emblem does not exist. Maybe we will start seeing that of Repubblika?" Certainly, newly-elected Ber- nard Grech is not without his critics and a reshuffle earlier this week revealed a surprising refus- al by stalwarts who backed him to accept redefined portfolios. "All you true Nationalists look out, because Bernard Grech removed the emblem to make way for Daphne supporters and for Manuel Delia's Repubblika," claimed one Facebook com- menter not enamoured by the anti-Delia . "This is the new page he has been harping about," another said. "Now all he has left to do is to remove our glorious anthem too, before going on to erase our history. Let's stand up to him now before it's too late." The PN has previously experi- mented with a modern, stylised version of its traditional em- blem, when in March 2019 the party used a version employed by youth section MZPN. Then too, party members had protest- ed and the party had quickly reverted to the traditional em- blem. Former party leader Adrian Delia did not shy away from of- fering his view of the temporary absence of the party's "powerful" emblem. "It points to a rich and glorious history, it is a remind- er of good and bad times which have changed and defined our country," he said of the emblem designed in 1927. Delia said the 'maduma' was a symbol that united all Na- tionalists. "It never brought us any shame," he said. "Whoever throws it away would be deny- ing history and the party." The Labour Party changed its own long-time emblem early in- to Joseph Muscat's leadership, in a design competition that was one by publicity company ANG, which updated the party font, retained solely the party torch, and neutralised its garish col- ours to a standard white, grey and red hue. Some of these priorities which Grech says he has discussed with Bernard Grech will be entrench- ing social justice across all policy domains, how to achieve econom- ic growth jeopardising the natural environment, restoring human dignity for residents, improving wages and pensions, but crucially – he adds – "a determined effort to dilute the toxic tribalism in our political mechanics." But what does 'renewal' mean for the PN, in terms of being a prospective government-in-wait- ing? Keep in mind that only this week, Bernard Grech's reshuf- fle prompted MPs to kick back against his proposed changes, a move that did not go down to well with a public that has been yearning for a united opposition. Apart from that, the PN has long been outflanked by the Labour's civil liberties programme, a con- venient tool to pit liberals and conservatives against each other. "You have to keep one thing in mind that the PN is not a party with a homogenous base but one that is more akin to a coalition of diverse groups that converge to- gether on a number of common principles and goals," Grech says. "Over the years, I learnt that the strongest element that bonds the elements in the party together is our collective aspiration to shape and deliver policies which nur- ture the common good in our country: policy is a strong con- verging factor. "In this sense, renewal means reviewing each major policy domain, realigning it to our col- lective goals in both social and economic facets of the equation, and doing this in the most repre- sentative way possible to reflect the aspirations of the diversity we stand for." While Grech will retain a port- folio on research and innovation and the post-COVID response, shadowing minister Owen Bon- nici, his horizontal policy-shap- ing role will be a central one in terms of shadowing. "I shall be supporting my colleagues in re- viewing and enhancing our ex- isting policy lines to bring them closer to the citizens' expecta- tions. This is a cornerstone of ef- fective shadowing as we cannot be taken seriously if we just cry wolf at any mishap that occurs but we need to also contribute to improvements whilst we serve in Opposition." Grech hopes that by bringing together the public and stake- holders to develop the PN's poli- cies, he can help the party evolve into "an exceptional alternative to this government." "I am a firm believer that the strong policy base we shall be creating will shift the political narrative from one which is reac- tive to one that is visionary, pas- sionate to bring about positive changes for our country."
