maltatoday | SUNDAY • 21 MARCH 2021 9 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 754. Great reed warbler THE great reed warbler (M. bufula prima) is one of those unnerving birds that could be singing its heart out just two metres from your face but still you do not see it. Well no wonder really, since it skulks in thick reedbeds and is the colour of dry reed: brown, pale brown, and some more brown. Plus it's a small bird, and 'great' only as war- blers go. Still, even without spotting the bird, you can still enjoy the great reed warbler if it decides to sing from its hideout. The song may be nothing more than a series of repetitive creaks and wheezes, but strangely you find yourself hanging on to it. I know I do. It is another of those lovely sounds I associate with spring.
