Last week, Malta's winning chances stood at 20%, but by end of week our chances fell to 13%, with the bookies predicting third place for Je Me Casse. Having bookmakers place Malta at third place put a dampener on Maltese chances of bringing the Eurovision home, but with a week of televised performances ahead, not all hope is lost for Destiny Chukunyere. Malta still seems to be a fan favourite to win the contest this year. Destiny won this year's OGAE Poll, one of Eurovision's largest fan polls, which could be a good omen for how Malta will fare in the televote. And beyond that, Destiny was presented with the OUTTv award on Thursday, an honour previously awarded to memorable Eurovision winners like Loreen and Mans Zamerlow. But Malta also faces some serious competition: Italy offers a punky, alternative entry for those who want to avoid the flamboyance of 21st century Eurovision, while France's entry exudes elegance in a minimal but powerful one-woman show. A celebration of all things kitsch and never worth taking too seriously, a Maltese victory could still mean a tourism boon with a 2022 May on steroids as fans across the continent book tickets for the Grand Final. If Malta loses, finance minister Clyde Caruana can rest easy next Saturday knowing he won't have to budget for an overpriced talent show this October.
